Did anyone notice
that gas went WAY up today? Yesterday in Memphis it was about $3.40 or so - today it is $3.55/9. Thats a big overnight jump.

Has this happened anywhere else?

Annette

13. I noticed it earlier in the week...
started seeing the increase on Tuesday & refilled my car at one of the last stations to raise their prices.

2. It was the same today as the last several days here
But we pay $3.75 (reg) here in California, so its already high.

3. No, not here. It's still $3.69/gallon. I just came back from the store and noticed.
That's about the lowest price gas has ever gotten down to here in Boise, Idaho.

There's a few places where they sell it at $3.67/gallon but they are all located mostly downtown.

4. One thing I have noticed is the number of freight trains has dropped off dramatically.
We used to get 3 regular freight trains pulling through here every day.
Sometimes they were shorter trains with fewer cars than usual.
But, now it looks to me like they have stopped running the one freight train that used to go through here at 6 PM entirely.

6. In Boise, that would be the UP, the Union Pacific.
I was going out to get some pictures to share with another train fan on another web site, and I noticed that the 6 PM freight train was no longer running. I was really surprised. I don't know if Union Pacific rerouted it south of here or what. It used to run right through town and having grown up loving to watch trains, I was surprised when it didn't come through town.

7. Found BVRR. So you're on UP main line?
Edited on Sun Jul-17-11 01:30 AM by elleng
I worked at Interstate Commerce Commission 20+ years, so know a bit about this stuff. You noticed change when? UP may have interchange relationship w BVRR. Short-line business can be difficult.

'There are 84 customers who will be served by the BVRR, several of which are currently customers of Watco’s Eastern Idaho Railroad, Great Northwest Railroad and Yellowstone Valley Railroad. Commodities shipped on the branches include potatoes, lumber, fertilizer and fuels.
The BVRR’s Wilder Branch runs from Wilder to Caldwell, Idaho and the Boise Cut Off runs from Nampa to just southeast of Boise, Idaho. The BVRR has also obtained trackage rights from Nampa to Caldwell, Idaho from the Union Pacific Railroad.

“Our positive relationship with the Union Pacific Railroad, a solid strategic operating plan and our desire to immediately grow the overall business will allow the BVRR to continually add quality transportation value to the area,” said Brown.'

'Trackage rights' from UP. (Older story, '09.)

12. Yes, Boise is on the main line. But, I think what you said is what must be what is going on here.
They must be taking that particular freight train south of town. There is a southern rail line just to the south of Boise. I didn't notice that train not running through town until a few weeks ago. It may have been going on longer than that, but I didn't notice it before then. It used to be the longest train of the 3 regular trains that went through here.

8. Odd that you would mention that
and that I would be on it and in the thread and see it. We live in the country and we have a RR track across the road behind the farm in front of us. Lately there have been many many trains, sometimes as many as 2 an hour for a part of the day, going through. We notice because we can hear it when the windows are open (not now in this heat) but also because there is an intersection with a road about 1/4 mile south and one less than that to the north and they must blow their horn before and as they cross. I just started noticing the last few days that I have not really heard any. There must be much less train traffic here, kind of all of a sudden, for me to not recall any. I wonder about that too.

9. Indeed it did
Went from 3.43 to 3.69 here in St. Louis on Friday. I have a buddy who drives a delivery truck and he will always call me when he sees the price going up in case I am in need of a fill up on my way home. I can sometimes duck into a station that hasn't gone up as of that time. Normally I will fill the tank on Tuesday early AM in order to get in before the weekly price increase, but now it seems that has become more of a moving target.

Very happy the car gets 40+ mpg.

11. happened here like last week i think. was 3.74 in some places and then i got my tops gas points for
.60/gallon off and the next thing i remember the price jumped to 3.87/gal. i was like, wtf! grr!!! I guess I am lucky because I don't HAVE to go anywhere, but I have been avoiding driving which has meant we haven't even been to the library yet this summer. By this time last summer we had been there at least three times. Once a week. Just very disheartening. I could take the kids to the library right here in town, but they have very limited hours vs the one in batavia. They are only opened from 1-5 where the batavia one is opened at 9-7. we usually go at 9:30-11 and then go to the park for a couple hours and bring our lunch. But I've had to save my gas for appointments.
