Automakers will air ads attacking Obama's 56.2 mpg rule
By Fred Meier, USA TODAY

U.S. and foreign automakers are publicly taking the gloves off in the fight over proposed fuel economy rules for 2017 to 2025, launching radio ads accusing the Obama administration of threatening the industry's fragile recovery.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers on Tuesday will start airing 60-second radio spots in seven key states, Drive On colleague Aaron Kessler of the Detroit Free Presshas learned. The Alliance also recently began airing more policy-oriented ads on news radio in Washington, D.C.

In the new ads, an ominous voice will warn that "after tough times, today's auto industry is on the road to economic recovery," but that the proposed, much higher 56.2 mpg fuel economy requirement "threatens that progress" and will cause job losses, less choice and higher prices for vehicles -- and an "electric vehicle mandate."

The effort is part of a broad national campaign that the automaker trade group hopes will rally consumers against the 56.2 mpg rule the White House has demanded.

23. Because it's just that, a rule
Some consumers don't like being told what to do, even if it's not directed at them. Others will argue it is more expensive, and others yet will argue it will make performance go down. How fast could the new Mustang possibly be if it has to be 56.2 mpg?

11. I don't know about now, but we could in the future.
The 2012 Ford Focus get up to 40mpg. Proper driving habits could probably push that up to 45mpg.

It my 3.0L V6 Sebring, I average 27mpg. I use to average 22mpg, until I started to see how I could change my driving habits and push up the fuel economy. I accelerate slow and rarely drive faster than 60mph.

5. My God - That Guy Obama Can't Do Anything Right Can He?.....
Edited on Sun Jul-17-11 09:03 AM by global1
He wants people to have decent healthcare and he gets criticized. He doesn't want the country to go into default and he gets dumped on by the Repugs. Now because he wants us to be on the road to oil independence they're going to dump on him for this too? I guess this President is just anti-American. (sarcasm)

6. Of course they don't like it.
We should have had far more stringent mpg requirements much earlier. I remember when auto makers screamed about the original meager emission requirements in the late 1960s. But now, after years of innovation, cars are cleaner and better running than ever before. The only cars our domestic auto makers seem interested in manufacturing are the larger SUV/mini-van/pickup truck types. They will simply have to change.

15. Auto makers fought seat belts and air bags, too
It took decades and untold carnage on the highways before auto makers were finally forced to build safer cars. There was always an excuse, usually along the lines of "We can't market safety!" Look at ads nowadays, and you hear all about crash tests, safety, side curtain air bags, and on and on.

We've been hearing for decades about "reducing our dependence on foreign oil." Well, here's a real, concrete proposal that will do that. What do we hear from the wealthy elites? "Aaaaahhh! It will reduce our profitability! We can't do that! No, no, no!"

Maybe it's time to nationalize these fuckers?

12. Obama offers to ease 56.2-mpg gas mileage proposal
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/07/report-obama-offers-concessions-on-gas-mileage-proposal/1

The automakers, UAW and the National Automobile Dealers Association have argued that the proposed corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard of 56.2 mpg would add thousands of dollars to the cost of vehicles and eliminate jobs assembling larger and heavier vehicles such as full-size pickups and SUVs.

The UAW is concerned about the potential impact the higher CAFE standard would have on profitability, jobs and wages, Sean McAlinden, chief economist for the Center for Automotive Research, said last week.

19. By 2025 there will be fuel rationing, either by quantity or price

Of course, just as now, it will be by price.

The rich will continue to drive around in their land yachts. The rest of us will scramble to find a way to afford $20/gal fuel.
