Herman Cain: Communities should be able to ban mosques
Source: Raw Story
By David Edwards

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said Sunday that any community should be able to ban mosques because there is a big difference between Islam and "our other traditional religions."

Last week, Cain came out again a proposed mosque in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on the grounds that it was an "infringement and an abuse of our freedom of religion."

"They have operated, Muslim worshipers at another site there for more than 20 years," Fox News Chris Wallace noted in an interview with Cain. "What is your objection for them building a new mosque?"

"Our Constitution guarantees separation of church and state," Cain explained. "Islam combines church and state. They are using the church part of our First Amendment to infuse their mosque in that community and people in the community do not like it, they disagree with it. Sharia law is what they are trying to infuse... What I am saying is American laws in American courts."

1. Whenever somebody mentions Shariah, I'm sure they've never heard of Beit Din or Jewish law. nt

Edited on Sun Jul-17-11 11:53 AM by Botany
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech,
or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Or maybe not.

Supreme Court already reviewed that issue and the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment
of the Federal Constitution prevents towns from applying zoning laws to ban the construction and use of religious houses of worship.

21. Actually, I guess I've been lucky. I've never heard of this clown
I am very unimpressed. What yutzses like Mr. Cain just don't get is these "the other" rules can be applied to oh-so-many subgroups of so-called "undesirables".

It's really sort of sad, in a way. Of course, he is a RWer, so I expect nothing more of him.

6. It never ceases to maze me when the head of a corporation can be such an imbecile.
It must be an act put on for the droolers.

If it isn't, it is then proof that being smart has little or nothing to do with making a lot of money,

9. Well, his corporation is pretty much out of business
At least in this part of the country. I used to like Godfather's Pizza too (though I obviously had no idea the company was run by such an asshole)

7. Someone should remind Cain that his redneck pals used to burn down black churches.
Edited on Sun Jul-17-11 12:01 PM by Tierra_y_Libertad
Because they saw them as a threat.

Edited to add: And, black owned businesses for the same reason.

13. Let us take his bigoted, hateful belief to its next logical step:
My community can ban your Christian churches too, right?
What about those effin' Mormon churches and those child-raping Catholic Church Priests? we can ban those from our communities too, right?
7th Day Adventists, don't ja just hate them too? Southern Baptists with their Jesus stompin' and singin' and yellin', can't we ban them too? Cain, Can we ban the Christian Churches who advocate bombing abortion clinics and murdering doctors? Can we ban them from our communities too?

Cain, Why don't we make it easy and just ban you from our collective community. You are a pox, a poison and banishment is the cure. get out you bigoted, hateful, vain fool!

15. Speaking of combining church and state,
The Bishop of Rome aka the Pope is head of state for the sovereign city-state, Vatican City.

The Supreme Governor of the officially established Christian church of England is the head of state of the United Kingdom.

So by Cain's thinking{sic} neither Catholic nor Anglican churches should allowed in communities which don't want them. After all, both Vatican City and the UK have laws which differ from America's.

Personally, I'd rather have a mosque in my neighborhood than the average fundie church.

18. If that logic holds....
Edited on Sun Jul-17-11 12:20 PM by Generic Brad
Can we get Christian churches out of my neighborhood? If enough of my neighbors are atheist, can we force Christians out of our neighborhood?

The concept of doing that is absurd. It amazes me that Cain cannot see this could cut both ways and is anti-American. This country has freedom of religion. He needs to leave those of other faiths alone.

19. The constitution guarantees...
...freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion. Works both ways gang. If you can't deal with living next to Fundies, Muzzies or Zionists practicing what they will, ya best move somewhere else.
