Lamar Alexander: Unlike Tea Partiers, Shooter Read Marx, Hitler, And Burned U.S. Flag
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 12:24 PM by RamboLiberal
On CNN Sunday morning, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) sought to deflect blame for yesterday's attack in Arizona away from the Tea Party.

Twice, unsolicited, Alexander highlighted facts about the culprit that clash with tea party norms.

"What we know about this individual, for example, is that he was reading Karl Marx, and reading Hitler, and burning the American flag," Alexander said. "That's not the profile of a typical tea party member if that's the inference that's being made."

-----

Alexander's statements reflect the defensive crouch Republicans find themselves in after Saturday's shooting. They came in response to Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) on the same program, who criticized Sarah Palin's violent rhetoric. Alexander said politicians and journalists should avoid drawing connections between the shooting and the broader political environment.

"In all of the talk about this, we have to be very careful about imputing the motives or the actions of a deranged individual to any particular group of Americans who have their own political beliefs," he said.

3. It's perfectly reflective of American Neo-Nazis, who are the Teabag on meth.
It's amazing how little understanding some politicians have of their own base.

5. Tea Partiers themselves say they are a diverse group of Americans
made up of Democrats, liberals, republicans, libertarians, and conservatives. Do I believe that? No, I think they are bunch of racist hicks.

11. You know I've actually been thinking about that too...........
Not that I could win, but DAMN at least I would be a SERIOUS alternative. Unfortunately unlike most politicians, I have to work.

12. I actually
want to go into politics and try and help this country. Once I get out of school its something I'm thinking about, but honestly I doubt I'll have the money for it. I guess its like my dad says until we get public financing like they have in Germany and some other European countries politics in America will always be just a game for the rich.

16. Well, it sounds like you're considerably younger than me........
so you probably DO have a better chance at getting into it than I do.

The only advice I can offer to younger lefties is what Chris Hayes said. Remember it's a calling, not a team sport. It'll ALWAYS be difficult. Good luck!

15. BTW by SERIOUS alternative I don't mean that I would..........
have a snowball's chance in Hell of winning. I mean a socialist running in Tennessee would be totally DIFFERENT from what's out there now. :)

19. I know the feeling
in TN Socialist is the next thing to Satan it seems. Blah its tempting to move to more sane state to start my career off, maybe Vermont or California. Though I would like to help my home state move into the 21st century if I could.
