FOX & Bush v Gore
Edited on Sun Jul-17-11 09:14 PM by kpete
History will note that, in a dozen different ways, Bush almost certainly lost the popular vote in Florida. Had Bush's brother not been governor there, Gore would have won the state's electoral votes and the electoral college. Had Bush's cousin not been perched at Fox News--and was the first network election chief to call the state for Shrub--the other TV networks might not have followed suit and instead covered the race properly on election night.

2. I have thought about this subject a lot since the story broke

Election 2000 and the Bush* cousin calling Florida for Bush* (while talking to Jeb on the phone) while it was still considered too close to call. Always helps to have a corrupt news mogul in your back pocket if you want to influence the public relations angle of elections, right?

3. We Like To It was Conspiracy
Us Dems like to think it is a conspiracy, but like 09/11, the truth is what the truth is and conspiracy, is well false. It was that really close and the Supreme Court saw through that.

4. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court saw only what it wanted to see
Are you aware the Safe Harbor provision was written to ensure that electoral college votes were dispatched ON THE PONY EXPRESS in time for the horse, rider and votes to make it to DC before the electoral college votes were counted? Before you say anything about the letter of the law, there is also the intent which is extremely important. During this era, making allowances for how long it takes a horseback rider to deliver the votes to DC could be significantly reduced to the time it takes for a Federal Express package to arrive overnight, especially if one can avoid negating 51 million votes for President by making that adjustment, or in otherwise, properly interpreting the intent of the Safe Harbor provision, don't you think?

And do you honestly think stopping a recount is totally okay because to allow one to be taken gives more weight to the vote which is recounted to the disadvantage of those who had their votes counted originally is an argument which passes even the Reasonable Man test? Really?

5. BS and BS
The Supreme Court *saw through that*?

What does that mean?

We know for a fact what the counts were. We know what the count for Bush was, and what the count for Gore was.

Are you saying that if an election is close, the Supreme Court gets to choose the loser to take the office?

7. Is this a joke?
There were so many things wrong in Florida it was hard to keep up. If you don't think there was a coordinated effort, please review the history.
Remember the butterfly ballots that were designed by a Republican election official who became a Democrat for the election and then switched back to being a Republican after the election? Remember the "people's protest" that was really made up of Republican operatives? Remember the broken voting machines in minority neighgorhoods? Also - they were insufficient numbers to accomodate all the voters.
Is that what the Supreme Court saw through?

8. Google "2000 election Florida over votes"
Florida law counts as a valid vote any ballot in which "the intent of the voter" can be ascertained.

Gore got several thousand so-called over-votes which are ballots indicating a vote for Gore and his name written in the space provided for "write-in candidate."

Clearly, these were legal votes according to Florida law.

But the Supreme Court disallowed a recount which would have counted those votes.

It's not a "conspiracy" so much as just a cabal making sure their guy won.

6. They gave bush the "Ability" to claim a Win
and placed Gore on the Defense

Would the votes have been allowed to be counted - probably YES
