"Kulis property opens to a new future"
The old Kulis Air National Guard Base on Raspberry Road is for sale. Or lease. Or a combination thereof.
The cavernous hangars and warehouse have already caught the attention of one of Alaska's hottest industries: the film business. But so far, no one has paid the $100 lease application fee. The base's neighbors in Sand Lake are watching closely, concerned about the possibility of increased air operations, traffic and noise.
The Air Guard's 176th Wing moved operations to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson earlier this year and took its C-130 planes and rescue helicopters with it. Kulis had been its home for more than 55 years, the launching point for countless Alaska rescue and recovery missions as well as international deployments.
The state owns the 130-acre parcel, in a prime spot at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. It expects to officially take it over at the end of September. The Air Guard moved out following a recommendation of the 2005 Base Closure and Realignment Commission.
