News Corp May Boot Murdoch
News Corp May Boot Murdoch
COULD DAUGHTER ELISABETH REPLACE HIM?

By M Cantor, Newser Staff
Posted Jul 18, 2011 9:27 AM CDT

(NEWSER) – As News Corp continues to reel from the phone hacking scandal, its independent directors are wondering whether it’s time for a leadership change, insiders tell Bloomberg. The independent directors—who make up 9 seats of the 16-member board—complain that they’ve been given too little information about the scandal and that News Corp has responded too slowly. Murdoch himself seems to be “in denial” about possible repercussions, directors tell Bloomberg.

The Guardian says daughter Elisabeth—who, unlike her father and brothers James and Lachlan, last week argued that Rebekah Brooks should resign—looks increasingly like the best family candidate to replace him. But the Guardian also notes that Murdoch biographer (and Newser founder) Michael Wolff today said that Murdoch needs to face the uncomfortable reality that none of his kids may be considered competent enough to get the keys to the kingdom.

1. Murdoch is only the tip of this iceberg
This problem is systemic within the company and just removing Mudoch won't change much, IMHO. What lies beneath needs to be brought to light as well.

That will take time. Maybe having Murdoch leave is some kind of preemptive attempt to make the whole thing go away. I seriously hope that it is too late for that kind of quick fix.

8. Given that he only hires lickspittle lackeys
Everyone from the janitor on up probably has the same work (lack of) ethics.

2. How could they do that, doesn't he personally own the majority of the stock?

It's just something i have heard, maybe mistakenly

On edit, the article, turning it over to family still won't mitigate legal culpability. The summons for court appearances will be fun

3. He's ready to retire anyway
So that's probably the move they'll make to shut down or at least take the wind out of the investigation. He'll still control Elisabeth, though, so it won't make much difference IMO.

10. Let's hope he is foolish enough
People with such position at the age of 80 often seem set in their ways. Maybe we all get lucky and that arrogance will show itself for public display
