Man tests law by claiming to be a 'pastafarian'

An undated photo provided by Niko Alm on Thursday, July 14, 2011, showing his drivers license photo. (AP Photo/Niko Alm, ho)

VIENNA (AP) -- Niko Alm wanted to test an Austrian law saying that head coverings would only be allowed in official documents for religious reasons.

So the tongue-in-cheek atheist applied for a new driver's license in his country with a photo of himself wearing a pasta strainer as headgear. Alm said he was a "pastafarian" and that the headpiece was required by his religion.

The application process took three years, but Alm said Thursday that he's now got his new license.

Police officials in the mostly Catholic country did not sound amused.

3. He belongs to a breakway sect
known as the Colanderites.

They save the cooking water drained from pasta, and consider it Holy Water.

6. It is written in the Apocrypha of the sacred books
of the Pastafarians, known collectively as the Holy Mostaccioli,

'Arrrrh! Thou shalt place the Pasta directly into the boiling water,

and thou shalt anoint the water with a dab of Olive Oil to prevent the woeful transgression of Boiling Over,

and thou shalt cook until the Pasta is al dente, neither raw, nor mushy,

and thou shalt tip the contents of the sacred Vessel into the chosen Colander,

making certain to collect the holy waters in another Vessel beneath.

And thou shalt dine upon the divine Pasta according to the prescribed rites,

but the Water from the cookage, thou shalt allow to cool, and thou shalt preserve it, and use it

for anointing those who come to confess and truly repent the eating of the vile Rice-A-Roni,

and also those who hath failed to Talk Like a Pirate on the Extremely High and Mighty Holy Day of 19 September,

and yet those who hath failed to sing with proper reverence our great FSM hymn, "On Top of Spaghtetti, all covered in Cheese, I lost my true Meatball when somebody sneezed."

Thusly have I instructed to you, and thou shalt keep the holy waters of the pasta pot, and as a sign that thou wilt keep this Covenant, thou shalt cover thy head with the Colander.'

Thus spake the FSM, all honor to Her Greatness. Arrrh!

10. Good one
I'd almost forgotten that one, and I'm in my late 50s and from New Jersey!

Must say 50 hail Marinaras in penitence.

12. LMAO!
Colanderites :)

I'm a Saucy Pastafarian, and as you know, we are less conservative in our views on the FSM.

Oh well, I'll still offer him a Ra-men.

7. But will he wear it all the time?
The reason for the Religious exception is that it would be rare to find someone who has such a religious requirement NOT to be seen without it. This goes for Orthodox Jews and Female Moslems. People of both faith, who will NOT be pictured without their religious "hats" (lack of a better name) will also NOT be seen in public without the same religious garb. If you are willing to wear it all the time, no one will object to you calling it religious wear, but if you are NOT, then it is NOT religious wear and will be banned.

If the Austria Authority are smart, agree to the picture and a few days later send a Police Officer to where he lives pr works, tell the Officer to wait will he is clearly doing something in public, then have the officer ask him for his ID and ask him why he does NOT have on his "Religious Garb". The Officer will testify he had done that for other, but when it came to others the officer always saw them on the public street in their religious garb (and this no violation of the law by such wearers of religious grab) or the Officer arrested those fakers for the same offense,

Remember the purpose of any ID is for the Police to make sure you are you, nothing else. If you always wear Religious garb, not a problem, but if you sometime do, and other times do not, then it is a problem. Thus how this religious exception is worded, to protect those people who will NEVER be seen in public any other way, and the rest of the population who may appear dressed otherwise. This exception has little to do with Religion but everything to do with being able to ID people.
