Do computers operate in accordance with a policy of appeasement? |
|
They obey commands. On the other hand, they take commands literally, which can frustrate some people, especially the kinds of people who provoke others to try to appease them.
Perhaps, to appease a person, you need to guess what command the person intends to make and then obey that guessed command, and not necessarily obey actual commands that are given.
On the other hand, what if the person hopes to be disobeyed, so that the disobedience can be used as a pretext to complain and make additional demands? In that case, correctly guessing what the person intended to command, and then obeying that command could fail to appease the person.
Some dictionaries simply say that to appease is to reduce to a state of peace. However, the person might respond to the attempt to conciliate with increasingly extreme warlike actions. Thus, it's difficult to see the ultimate outcome of a policy of appeasement as a basis for defining appeasement.
What is appeasement?

3. How the computer acts depends on the programers. |
|
I have a hard time reaching terms of appeasement with my computer when I go, for example, to search on the googles. I type what I feel to be reasonable search terms/keywords and my computer starts spelling out stuff it imagines I might want. To appease the Googles, I choose one when really my intent was to type something entirely different. In the end, I get what google wants me to get and what else? When I disobey the googles, they appease me by adding my terms to the list...or do they? It appears they might indeed want me to disobery.... How weird is that?

4. Whether or not a computer acts depends on whether it studied acting. |
|
However, regardless of whether it is acting or being genuine, its operation is in accordance with the programmer's instructions. That's why I asked whether it has a policy of appeasement. I meant appeasement of the programmer, not necessarily appeasement of the user.

5. The programers are trying to appease their bosses. I don't think |

I'll ever be able to appease the programers. I still haven't figured out what they want and why they keep doing it.
