You mean they hate Wall Street reform? I thought they loved it? "Do you think this is the new New Deal?" It's the next best thing.

|
I certainly agree Manny is no troll. But the comment, "I take it Reagan gets a pass" came across, to me at least, as a sarcastic insinuation that the OP was somehow letting Reagan off the hook while railing against fellow Democrats. I doubt many here would dispute that Reagan set the nation on a destructive course, but the OP was taking issue with our own party's complicity in going further and further down that destructive road. So I didn't understand (and I guess I still don't) how the remark concerning giving Reagan a pass bore any relevance to the discussion at hand. Again, sorry if I misinterpreted it.

I find it supremely ironic, if not offensive, that you have the balls to ask "Who are you?" of one of the very few posters on DU who, unlike you or me, or most people here, actually uses his real name. If you're so interested in him, google his name and you will find he has posted over 100 letters on Salon, under his very own name.
Back in the mists of time, when DU was new, I believe a rule was put in place against "calling people out". If you consider "Who are you?" a valid question, and not "calling someone out", then turnabout being fair play, what is your full legal name? I really don't care, and I don't think you'll provide it. But I hope you get the point, and don't challenge other DUers with "Who are you?" I think your only purpose was to draw attention away from your own post re "giving Regan a pass", which in turn was meant to distract from the points made in the OP.

Reagan left office in 1989.
2011 - 18 = 1993.
1993 > 1989.

While "eat your peas" is a reference to the campaign against Carter, the OP explicitly called out 18 years and Triangulation, Clinton's "innovation" in Democratic politics.
Yet somehow you want to make this about Reagan.
Please show me on the doll where the bad administration touched you.

Over the long haul, if you keep choosing the lesser of two evils, what you're choosing among is pretty downright fucking evil. But you never said, "Muah-hah-haha-HA! Look at me, I'm choosing to be evil!" The difference between evil and lesser evil dwindles to the point where it's splitting hairs and you need a microscope to see the daylight between them, but why bother looking? Today's for-real, self-declared evil with no apologies will be tomorrow's lesser evil.

43. I became politically aware in the '70s |
|
When the game really changed.
When the GOP became fascist, bible thumping assholes who inflicted the biggest snowjob ever on the America people. They did it with lots of money from the wealthy and corporations and went directly to attacking the poor and the working class.
A funny thing happened... The very people who were being attacked started supporting their attackers. They wanted to be just like their attackers. This polarized the nation even further.
The attack on education, the New Deal and the Great Society began in earnest. That people are poor because we have programs, so we should restrict access to them. Don't you want to work like a dog to be rich? God wants you to. Who told us that? The GOP did and the PEOPLE supported them.
Yes, we do have some blame for this. Our blame is that we decided not to play the GOP's game only in reverse. If the people were convinced to slit their own throats, we obliged them. It's been going on for a lot longer than 18 years.
We are now at a point in history where key right wing deas are, not only generally accepted, but are made neccessary and untouchable in the public arena. That came about only after years and years and years of repeated propaganda and outright theft of wealth upwards. The people gladly handed the keys of the kingdom to their masters because that's what God wants. God is never wrong.
So sure, blame the last 18 years if you like and blame us for drinking the poisoned water. But I prefer to remember who actually poisoned the well and that time long ago when they poisoned it.

47. That is not my recollection at all. Not even close |
|
As I recall I spent most of 1980's out of a job because a lot of my fellow Americans wanted to be "hip", and drive imported and non-union made versions of what I was making before I was laid off. President Obama and the Dems or appeasement didn't have a damn thing to do with any of that.
People just need to look at it this way. They may have got some nice deals on some real nice cars back then. But the actual cost of those good deals is just now becoming apparent.
Be nice if guys like me would just forget what really happened, wouldn't it be?
