Follow up to a previous story about a lemonade stand:
APPLETON — A day after Appleton police shut down a makeshift lemonade stand for violating city rules, Ald. Peter Stueck said he wants to change a law that bans selling products near a special event, even when the vendors are grade-school girls hoping for a little summer cash.

"I plan on talking to a few of the other aldermen to see what we can do about getting it changed," said Stueck, who represents the 9th District. "It's something that should really be fixed."

Citing a June 1 ordinance the Common Council passed unanimously, Appleton police told Lydia Coenen, 10, and her sister, Vivian Coenen, 9, about 7:30 a.m. Sunday that they wouldn't be allowed to sell lemonade near their home to patrons of the Appleton Old Car Show & Swap Meet in Pierce Park, a neighborhood tradition that dates back 15 years.

....

Margi Mann, the mother of the two girls, said an Appleton police officer came to their home on Monday to offer his apologies.

"Quite honestly, I don't think they really have anything to apologize for," Mann said. "They were (enforcing) what they thought were the regulations in the ordinance. The police officer was so kind and so nice. It was very sweet of them to stop by and apologize to the girls."
