Openly Gay Intern Daniel Hernandez Jr. Credited With Saving Life Of Rep. Giffords
Meet the Guy Who Might Have Saved Gabby's Life
Sun Jan 09, 2011 at 10:17:22 AM PST

Daniel Hernandez Jr., the 20-year old student intern credited with saving the life of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, confirmed to the Dallas Voice this morning that he is openly gay.

***** According to the Arizona Republic, Hernandez was standing about 30 feet from Giffords during the “Congress on Your Corner” event outside a Safeway store near Tucson.

****When the gunshots began, Hernandez ran toward them and began checking the pulses of people who’d been hit. When Hernandez got to Giffords, he used his hand to apply pressure to the entry wound on her forehead. He pulled her into his lap and held her upright so she wouldn’t choke on her blood. Hernandez used his hand to apply pressure to the wound until someone brought clean smocks from the meat department of the grocery store. He stayed with Giffords until paramedics arrived, then climbed into an ambulance with her. On the way to the hospital, he squeezed her hand and she squeezed back.

2. That brings tears to my eyes. When absolute madness
is staring them in the face, so many of these people were heroic and selfless.

5. Gay, Hispanic man
in a state that wants to "target" Hispanics, discriminate against gays. Then one of the victims is a child who was born on 9/11.

Is it me or does it seem that "somebody" is trying to send these people a message between the lines?

there were many heroes yesterday - he is right at the top of the list. I hope this gets widespread media attention.

13. Not much, really but it does contradict some stereotypes that persist.
You can probably think of a few. :-)

22. Yes, of course - sorry
I forget this stereotyping and ignorance is still alive and unwell in much of the country. It seems archaic to judge a person's character by race, age, orientation, appearance, et al. I guess I should get out more - and maybe there is more idealism left in me than I thought. Thank you.

15. let's be blunt
if the shooter had been gay it would be all we would hear about 24/7 so let us back in the glow of the hero being gay.

20. Heroes run towards danger.
Thank God he was there and knew what to do.

Yet six other people perished, sad to say. :(

I pray that Rep Giffords will recover and not lose her mentality. :(
