5 odd facts about moon landing (First man to pee on the moon, wine, etc)
The Moon Landing 42 Years On: Five Odd Facts (Includes Urine, Wine and a Petty Refusal To Take Photos)

It's an odd anniversary, the 42nd, so here are five odd facts about the mission.

5. Buzz Aldrin, First Man To Piss On The Moon
One giant leak for mankind -- Neil Armstrong may have been the first man to set foot on the moon, but Buzz Aldrin was the first one to take a leak on it. As millions watched across the globe unknowingly, Buzz let loose the floodgates and enjoyed a good old session of draining the lizard. The Moon Lizard.

4. NASA thought hard about not putting up a flag...
3. First drink on the moon: Vino, baby
2. No one at NASA knew what the hell Neil Armstrong was talking about with his "Tranquility Base" stuff

3. Imagine where Humanity could be were we to have continued exploring space?
Not just colonies on the moon or Mars, or mining asteroids -- we'd have developed new technologies that could help us on earth.

Even more, mankind could be working together in peace.

8. Yeah, We Could Be Blowing Shit Up On Jupiter
Very important.

We don't need new technologies, we need less people consuming resources.

13. When you wrote "We don't need new technologies "
Edited on Tue Jul-19-11 10:26 AM by demwing
What "We" are you referring to? Got a mouse in your pocket?

And more importantly, how do you suggest we reduce the amount of people that use all these resources? Rationing? War? Euthanasia?

14. We need both
It's not an either/or scenario.

We need lots of new technology and far less humans on this planet.

5. No one here is that stupid I hope.
I can understand on some conspiracy website or even some illiterate conservative website, but please don't tell me that there are people here that stupid. That would be disappointing.

20. The flag story is more complicated and distasteful than the article says
At least, as I remember it.

I worked at the Manned Spacecraft Center at the time of the first landing. Before the mission, I was told that the plan was to plant the UN flag on the moon, to emphasize that it belonged to all of mankind and not to any one nation.

Members of Congress got wind of the plan and threatened NASA with complete defunding if anything other than the US flag was planted. So the plans were immediately changed.

Now, that was all interoffice gossip, but to me at the time it had the ring of truth.
