Republican Reps. Paul Ryan and Sean Duffy will face an easier chance at reelection under redistricting maps the Wisconsin Legislature is set to pass this week.
The new map makes Duffy’s district about three percentage points more Republican, and Ryan’s about two points more Republican. Both districts were won by President Obama in the 2008 presidential race; under the new map, Obama would have still won Duffy’s district, but by a narrower margin, and Ryan’s district would have gone for his opponent, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).
The map is expected to come up for a vote on Tuesday in the state Senate and on Wednesday in the Assembly. Republicans control both chambers. Assuming it passes, the map would help the GOP hold the five congressional seats it currently occupies.
The party picked up two of those seats last fall: Duffy’s district had been held by Rep. David Obey (D-Wis.) since the 1960s, while freshman Rep. Reid Ribble (R-Wis.) won back a Green Bay-based seat Republicans had held until 2006. Democrats currently hold three seats.
