On the hearings in the UK... you can also tell
education background. Mrs. Brooks went to public (read private) school... from her perfect BBC accent. Some of the other MPs went to private (read public) school and probably public universities. We are a hard caste society, but you cannot tell from accents, YET. In the UK, which is more open now and easier to climb up, you can tell... it was a hard caste society up until not too long ago.

2. Her accent is practiced as they say
She's originally from Lancashire and she's working class. She attended Appleton Hall County Grammar School in Warrington. She's not a preppie, but she was always ambitious and was smart enough to learn French to join the pretentious gits.

3. Seems to my ear that our accents are blending now
I'm 64. I remember accents being very distinct even within New York City. Certainly, the old Boston Brahman accent is fading away in Massachusetts.

But I can imagine sharp distinctions evolving again.

It's an interesting topic.
