Obama endorses Feinstein bill to repeal Defense of Marriage Act
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-feinstein-doma-repeal-20110719,0,3081442.story?track=rss

President Obama endorsed a bill Tuesday that would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act, a 15-year-old law denying federal benefits for same-sex couples.

"The president has long called for a legislative repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which continues to have a real impact on the lives of real people – our families, friends and neighbors,” said White House spokesman Shin Inouye.

DOMA, passed by Congress in 1996 and signed into law by President Clinton, defines marriage as a legal union between one man and one woman.

Inouye said the bill introduced by Sen.Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) to repeal it would "uphold the principle that the federal government should not deny gay and lesbian couples the same rights and legal protections as straight couples."

3. If I were cynical I would say it was because he knows it won't pass so he can claim that he is for
it while knowing that it won't upset the other folks he is really trying to please. Would that this had come up when we had a majority in congress...

6. Tub for the liberal whale. It's the old DLC strategy:
Throw a few social issue crumbs to progressives, agree with the Republicans on what's REALLY important, like tax cuts for the rich, dismantling New Deal and Great Society social programs, and imperial wars that benefit the likes of Dick Cheney and Halliburton, and then claim that the Big Bad Republicans are the Greater of Two Evils, therefore vote for the corporatist Democrat.

Personally, I completely agree with repealing DOMA. I'm completely heterosexual, and pretty much of a social libertarian. I don't care who people marry.

But this does nothing for me. It does nothing to help myself or my family in this economic climate. Sorry, but it's not enough for me, Obama, in fact, it's irrelevant.

Show. Me. The. Money. Or I'll definitely vote for any REAL Democrat who primaries your sorry ass.
