Stay inside and keep hydrated, folks
Seriously.

The current heat index in Mpls is 120. I know it has to be even worse elsewhere. Take care of yourselves, DUers.

2. It is amazing that the moisture and heat levels are greater than the Equatorial jungles.
Edited on Tue Jul-19-11 04:49 PM by glinda
Perhaps that is our future. We will loose all the pines and snow and grow orchids or something.
We have had four blackouts so far here in mid MN.

20. Does that mean we'd have monkeys and parrots moving in too? That would be cool.
However, the poisonous snakes and insects- not so much.

3. Good advice.
Thanks for your concern.

It's sure hot here in CT, and expected to get worse the rest of the week.

4. Stay Safe Everyone
I know I would not be able to handle that kind of heat. Thankfully it has been pretty mild in socal. Just hope it stays that way for the rest of the summer. Hope everyone gets through this awful heat safely.

better than turning the oven on.

but, they'd probably walk by with their DSs or Ipods and laugh at me.

7. Eat tomato sandwiches.
and wear madras shirts. The Indians know what's light in hot climates. Also drink water w/lemon. Avoid strenuous exercise even if you're in great physical shape while outside in the heat of day. We are looking at >120 deg heat indexes in parts of the country.

But there's no climate change. :sarcasm:

9. And salt
If you sweat a lot, you need more salt.

Melons with a bit of salt on them are yummy and very cooling.

8. it's ironic though . . .
. . .high heat index = more A/C usage = more power consumption = more CO2 in the atmosphere = higher and higher temperatures.

11. I hibernate in South Florida ALL YEAR
since moving from NY. I cannot take sunshine (Summer SAD) and heat (rashes), even in Florida winters. Fortunately, I am off for the summer, set my AC at 74 degrees, and soak in cold baths of Dead Sea Salts. Helps with my physical condition, but not my psychological health, especially in the Fall and Winter. Cannot wait to move.

Stay inside with AC as much as you can. Wear sunscreen or UV protective clothing, and HYDRATE as much as possible if you can't.

12. I'm here in upstate NY
we had 2 thunderstorms with lots of rain yesterday and one this morning (I think-- ED has no windows but heard thunder). It has gotten up to about 93 in the past week but our AC has held in. I too feel oppressed by the sun when I dont' get a gloomy rainy day after a few days of the sunshine. I don't think I could hack it down South. Give me my 100+ inches of snow each year. I can hack that.

... is to wrap a wet cloth with ice in it around your neck. It cools the
blood coming through the jugulars.

22. I'm out every day all day (large livestock operation). I am suffering, I'll tell you.
Its still awful even though I'd acclimated and fit. I'm exhausted and have a vague headache all day (and yes, I am hydrated enough). Makes me pretty damn crabby I'll tell you.

Nobody bring up a burqa thread right now dammit or there will be hell to pay!! I will be unhinged.
