I'm finding a lot of bullshit on DU right now and I don't have the time for all the guessing games.

36. Maybe you could try reading the NYTimes - I'll even bold pertinent portions for you your highness
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/20/us/politics/20fiscal.html?_r=1&ref=global-home

The large attendance — 47 senators, including 23 Republicans — and the positive reactions inside and outside the meeting surprised even the six senators who produced the package. It would make deep spending cuts over time in domestic and military programs, including Medicare and Medicaid, and raise new revenues from closing myriad tax breaks and loopholes, while lowering tax rates across the board – much like last year’s plan from Mr. Obama’s fiscal commission.

so I'm guessing here, I don't even know if it was your reply that was deleted.

My prognosticator statement was directed at those proclaiming the end of SS and Medicare and Medicade and NASA and pretty much everything else before we even have a deal on the debt limit. These same psychics are the same ones claiming they'll never ever ever vote for, fund raise for or even get off their lazy TV watching backsides for a Democratic candidate again and then the second their apocalyptic vision fades into the ether they'll pretend they never said anything of the kind.

5. He made a qualified endorsement of the so-called Gang of Six proposal
While investment prospectuses are careful to point out that "past performance is no guarantee of future results," enough of us have been paying attention during the last 2½ years to know what this portends. That is to say, compromise away of the potentially good aspects of the proposal while accepting the most odious ones, all under the rubric of "practicality" or "political realities."

Of course, by the time something as actually been DONE, it's too late, and we are treated to the scolding of our betters about how we should have been more proactive in the first place. I think that may be my favorite part of the whole thing, watching some people pivot on a dime between "you're being prematurely hysterical and alarmist with your bullshit" to "it's too late now."

48. indeed it is- no one is saying not to speak up-
we all should do that, especially to our elected officials in concrete ways. Letters/e-mail/phone calls.
what the OP is addressing isn't peoples opinions, or fears, it's that there are many posts which are passing off individual opinions and assumptions as if their bleak outlook was evidence of the "done-deal".

The automatic rush to judgment based on fears NOT facts is not something I appreciate or support.

Juniperlea asked for facts to back up the highly vocalized fears and got nothing tangible in response.

We all have opinions, there is nothing bad or wrong about that- attempting to pass off our opinions and personal speculations as factual is just plain wrong.

but opinions are like that.

The facts that are being offered to back up the assumption that the President has sealed a deal and that it is completely terrible aren't appearing.

Lots of speculation and angry statements of betrayal, but no facts.

56. No one here has said the President sealed a deal. That is a straw man.
But there is plenty of information out here on the plan he showed favor for and the OP has shown zero signs of actually being interested in any of it. That's not opinion, that's observable fact.

Maybe you have a basic confusion about what a fact is or isn't. I don't.

19. Bingo!
After the deal is done, it is too late. I'd rather see a DU that is on top of the issue and attempting to discuss it and influence the debate than see a DU that says "trust your leaders" to do the right thing, although they have not proved themselves capable of such things. That is very shallow ground to stand upon, in my opinion.

Obama Basically Just Endorsed The Gang Of Six Debt Ceiling Plan

President Barack Obama all-but-endorsed a deficit reduction proposal introduced earlier today by the so-called "Gang of Six" U.S. Senators.

In a statement at the beginning of today's press briefing, Obama called the Gang of Six proposal "broadly consistent" with the vision for deficit reduction he laid out, adding that it is "balanced."

Obama has frequently mentioned that any debt limit deal will have to be in "balance."

The president called the Gang of Six proposal a "very significant step" in the talks, saying he has to read it over before giving it his full-throated endorsement.

The ratings agencies should have been disbanded, put out of business, destroyed. There's no excuse for not having done so in the wake of the 2008 crisis.

46. Right, he didn't specify his own plan, but...
his use of phrases like:
"we've got to be serious about tackling... entitlements",
"shared sacrifice",
"everybody is giving up something"
"modifications to Social Security"
and his saying the 'gang of six' plan which among other things calls for
a change in the Social Security COLA formula to chained-CPI "is balanced" and
is "in same playing field" as his ideas clearly has pushed some people's buttons.

Who knows what the final plan will look like at this point.

38. A thoroughly reasonable analysis by those who seem know what...
they're talking about and have no axe to grind:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/20/us/politics/20fiscal.html?_r=1&hp

Since nothing has actually happened yet hysteria over what might happen, or even probably will happen, is not called for. Undoubtedly, there will be things in the final agreement that we do not like, and the other side will get things we believe are insane. They will feel the exact same way.

Are we getting the worse of the deal? I don't doubt it, but that's what happens when the House changes to having teabaggers controlling it. Deal with it and get the House back. And keep the teabaggers a good distance from the White House.

(Hint: refusing to work for Obama or blue dogs next year won't help at all in this.)

Might I also suggest that we use this opportunity, however vile the occasion for it, to actually do something about the debt, which is, by all accounts, too big? Then, make the deal, thank the teabaggers for bringing it up, and destroy them utterly next year?
