US Military Deaths in Afghanistan at 1,560
Source: Forbes

As of Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at least 1,560 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The AP count is two more than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Tuesday at 10 a.m. EDT.

At least 1,295 military service members have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

Outside of Afghanistan, the department reports at least 99 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, 11 were the result of hostile action.

3. K & R, sadly.

Here in Kentucky, the flag is at half-staff on some days almost every week. That's the current protocol for honoring those who die in the line of duty. The sad stories just keep coming.

4. An Army Reserve unit from my community is heading there within a month
It's a transportation unit, and when I was at a function with them recently I asked one of the NCO's what they transport. I didn't expect his reply to be so chilling: "Fuel," he said.

Many of the troops had been deployed before and had already been awarded the Army's new Combat Action Badge.

For me, the hard part will be joining their families for their sendoff ceremony, watching them say goodbye, and knowing some won't return.

5. Actually, it is 1,591.
The "AP count" always gives an lower figure than the real number: http://icasualties.org/OEF/index.aspx

6. icasualties.org sez the count of American deaths in Afghanistan is 1,672
The War Department sends out notices of American deaths in the sandbox. icasualties.org posts the death notices on their web site and keeps track of the number of American deaths.

I'm fascinated that the DoD posts death notices and few, if any M$M, are capable of adding one to an existing total.
