Do you think this statement is true or false? |

True or false? We have a Democratic president and administration that is prepared to sign a tough package that includes both spending cuts and modifications to Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare that would strengthen those systems and provide for new tax revenues. Find out the answer here: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/20/us/politics/20fiscal.html?pagewanted=2&_r=2&ref=global-home

1. Whether I agree with it or not |
|
and whether it's true or false are two different questions.
Are you looking for two answers?

Do you think the statement is true or not? I.e. is the president prepared to sign a package of the type described?

7. I think the president is prepared to sign that type of package. |
|
Provided it passes in Congress.

3. You start off with a false premise in the first clause and it just goes to shit from there. |

What is the false premise, and how does it go downhill from there?

From what I am hearing from the senate today we will be cutting taxes on both corporations and individuals. Closing "loopholes" are supposed to be the answer for this. I do not trust these senators and Obama to protect social security and medicare.

5. It's not the right question. |
|
That is because the premise of the question is flawed because the crisis is manufactured.

8. Oh, I think I see what you (and Kenny) mean... |
|
You object to the fact that it's called a "tough" package. Is that right?
Please click through to the article--you'll see why I described it in that fashion.

10. No. I'm against any attack on our social safety net on the basis of a lie. |

9. But there's NO reason for the package to BE tough |

Bringing in more tax revenue from the people who aren't paying their fair share is the only politically, fiscally, and morally responsible thing to do. There is no reason to accept anything less.

11. I completely screwed this up. |
|
This is what happened. I read this direct quote from Obama in the NYT article:
“We have a Democratic president and administration that is prepared to sign a tough package that includes both spending cuts and modifications to Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare that would strengthen those systems” and provide for new tax revenues.
Many people have tried to say that Obama putting our safety net programs on the chopping block was not a serious offer but just a brilliant negotiating ploy, I thought that this quote--from Obama himself-- would firmly dispel any such beliefs. Alas, the way I went about it tried to be too clever. I should have just posted the quote, attributed it, and left it at that. My mistake.
