When ENRON hit the fan, Cliff BAXTER suicided.
The ENRON vice chairman had indicated he would tell the authorities what he knew.

He never had a chance, like Mr. Sean Hoare who likely would share his thoughts on News Corp, also a corrupt organization of benefit to the BFEE.

The Mysterious Death Of An Enron Exec

By Chris Oregan
CBS News
February 11, 2009 9:11 PM

It may be the biggest outstanding mystery in the Enron story: the death of Cliff Baxter, a former top Enron executive. He'd just agreed to testify to Congress in the Enron case. A congressional source tells CBS News that Baxter wasn't a target in the probe, he was to provide evidence against others.

SNIP...

Police won't talk while the case is open, so CBS News asked two experts - independent coroner Cyril Wecht and former homicide detective Bill Wagner - to review the reports. While suicide appears likely, both experts say the documents make it impossible to discount foul play.

Asked why he couldn't rule out murder, Wagner said, "because murder can be made to look like a suicide. ... Someone who is knowledgeable about forensics can very well have the ability to stage a murder, commit a murder and stage it to look as if it was a suicide, understanding what the police are going to be looking for."

SNIP...

Other unanswered questions include mysterious wounds on one hand and unexplained shards of glass in Baxter's shirt. All reasons to look deeper to rule out murder.

Oh. And he also feared for his life and had hired bodyguards.

Nothing suspicious.

9. 'Responsible people' kill people for a sip of water, let alone billions.
My dad's C.O. in the Navy had been captured by the Japanese -- I believe at Corregidor. After suriving the march up Bataan, he was put into one of the "Hell Ships" to the main islands of Japan. He shared a hold with several hundred other officers. Once a day, the captors would toss down a few bowls of rice and a bucket of water, which the Americans would fight one another to grab. After a few days of starvation rations, the men started to turn on one another -- even killing one another -- for a drink of water. My dad's C.O. said he would never have believed it, if he hadn't been there.

11. That's a sad, but not surprising, tale.
After learning about the Holocaust nothing humans do to one another has the power to surprise me anymore. :(

2. It won't be the Murdochs
It requires a sense of great shame and embarrassment to end it all. I don't think the Murdochs are capable of either.

10. Excellent point, RandySF. Chasing power and profit, they have no honor.
What I should have made clear: Mr. Baxter's death prevented a most important witness from taking the stand.

A report from a man I consider a "real journalist":

The strange and convenient death of J. Clifford Baxter—Enron executive found shot to death

By Patrick Martin
World Socialist Web Site
28 January 2002

EXCERPT...

Baxter received a subpoena from the Senate Government Affairs Subcommittee on Permanent Oversight and Investigation, along with 48 other people linked to Enron and Andersen. Investigators from the House Energy and Commerce Committee had told Baxter’s lawyer that they wished to interview him, but had not yet issued a subpoena.

SNIP...

Given the organized shredding operation, a systematic effort to destroy incriminating documents, Baxter’s evidence would be all the more critical, since he could testify, from the perspective of the highest levels of the company, what information Enron and Andersen were so afraid of. How can one not assume that Baxter, too, was “shredded” to prevent him from taking the witness stand?

A potential whistle-blower dies less than two weeks after his name first comes to public attention. What message does that send to others who might be considering testifying against Enron? And on top of that, the local police immediately declare his death a suicide. If there was foul play, those responsible have carried it out with impunity.

SNIP...

Far from being the target of media vilification, Baxter’s name had been linked to the Enron affair in a way that was largely favorable. His first appearance in the coverage of Enron came when the Watkins memo was made public, presenting him as an opponent of corporate fraud.

The passing of Mr. Hoare also robs us of the truth. At the very least, his death benefits a certain class.

15. Yes it does get a little crowded
on the ones that were looking for the truth and died
or where part of the problem.

Remember there are no conspiracies.
Only organized crime.

6. This is the first time I heard that Baxter had hired
bodyguards. Totally inconsistent with suicide, IMO.

I wonder where Ken Lay is living now, and how he is getting funding for ut.

12. The New York Times reported it originally.
I can't find that article, but here's a link about it:

Two days before he died, he broke down in tears as he discussed the firm's collapse with a business colleague, the New York Times reported.

The associate said Mr Baxter "was talking about perhaps needing a bodyguard, although I'm not sure where that idea came from", the paper said.

14. Five years ago, almost to the day, Tandalayo Scheisskopf read the coroner's report and....
...was the first person in the world, AFAIK, to correctly deduce that Baxter was killed with Glaser "safety" slugs. Might seem like a minor detail to some, even most, but that kind of personal investigation and experience-sharing represents the best of DU or any other site of like-minded, inquiring individuals.

I can't pull it up, but I could have sworn that he allegedly shot himself twice in the head with Glasers. That's...that's not possible. The odds of surviving a single shot to the head at close range like that from a hyper-frangible projectile like a Glaser are astronomical. Even to survive long enough simply to pull the trigger again. I could be wrong about the second shot, but I could have sworn there were two fired from the handgun recovered.

And that's just one little teeny bit of fishyness in a whole ocean of it surrounding Enron and his death, more specifically.
