"The meds are as bad as the migraines."
That was said to me by Steve, a member of the team responsible for maintainlg the Shuttle's robotic arm between missions. Whenever he was at work and felt and migraine coming on, the supe would just tell him to go home, no hesitation involved.

Like nearly 30 million other Americans, I experience migraines that are easily controlled with medication. I am a wife, a mother, a lawyer who worked her way through law school, a former state senator who achieved the repeal of a harmful piece of education policy in Minnesota, and a congresswoman who has worked tirelessly fighting against the expansion of government and wasteful spending.

Since entering the campaign, I have maintained a full schedule between my duties as a congresswoman and as a presidential candidate traveling across the nation to meet with voters in the key, early primary and caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina. I have prescription medication that I take whenever symptoms arise and they keep the migraines under control. Let me be abundantly clear - my ability to function effectively has never been impeded by migraines and will not affect my ability to serve as Commander in Chief.

The many questions I have received on this subject have allowed me to discuss this important condition that impacts individuals in nearly one in four households. However, as a presidential candidate and office holder, I am focused on performing my job, which has never been more important given the state of our economy and the millions of Americans that are out of work. While I appreciate the concern for me and my health, the greater concern should be the debate that is occurring in Washington over whether or not we will increase our debt, spending and taxes.

Slate's Dave Weigel reacts (same link):

Normally we might not care about a politician's medical regimen. I wasn't overexcited about David Wu's story of mental illness and drug use; I myself take anti-depressants. But the next part of this is obvious -- Bachmann's running for president. We might be interested in how she medicates this problem because medications have side effects. Excedrin Migraine can cause ulcers if overused. Triptans, like Relpax, have other side effects -- muscle weakness, for example. Bachmann's always come off as an extremely vigorous campaigner and pol, but so did John F. Kennedy, and voters had no idea that he had Addison's disease, or that he would later take cortisone and testosterone. And she'll probably have to discuss this in more detail before it goes away.

I don't think Steve any of the medications mentioned above, and the conversation we had took place three or four months back, so I cannot remember the scrip he is taking (and probably couldn't spell or pronounce it if I did). But I do recall him saying that it/they often caused extreme agitation, and sometimes unwarranted anger.

I don't know how common such side effects are. Nor do I have a clue what drug(s) Rep. Bachmann takes for her condition or what side effects (if any) might obtain to such. But I agree with Weigel: More infoformation is clearly needed if the Congresswoman is asking people to support her quest for a job that includes command of thousands of nuclear weapons.

1. It's scary that we take her seriously enough to find out about her medications.
Yikes.

2. I have never heard of an "easily controlled" migraine.
My mother and sister have been tortured all their lives with them. Me, I'm the lucky one. I get them rarely, usually very mild optical ones. But I remember some that lasted days.

4. My sister used to get them so bad they lasted for days. She was in law school at the time.
I get them. I've had them last for days. I went to the doctor when one lasted a week because I couldn't get anything done. I have kids to take care of. I usually ignore things unless they are affecting my ability to get things done. They gave me some medicine which did help that time. But not for every migraine I had. Sometimes a Sinus/Allergy medicine will help, but it doesn't get rid of it. Sometimes it doesn't touch it. I still get them, but haven't had one as bad as the ones that last a week in awhile.

15. I found one thing that works to stop them completely: Botox
sounds weird, I know, but just a few shots knocks them out for six months at a stretch. If their migraines start at their temples or between their brows it will work most effectively, if they start at the base of the neck Botox MAY work for them, but it's not guaranteed. Tell your mother and sister to Google "Botox for migraines" to learn more. I've been using it for 13 years and have only had one migraine in all that time (when it wore off). I used to have them at least twice a month.

3. I had a friend who's father was a paramedic
And he used to get migraines, and when he saw the first flash of one, he would take an Alka-Seltzer, and it would go away.

5. Everyone is different
I had lifetime migraines until my doctor came up with a pill I take daily to prevent them. Works for me beautifully with no side effects. Didn't work at all for guy at work who also gets migraines.

6. My migraine medicine has a lot of caffeine in it.
Caffeine seems to help me in all sorts of different ways, including my moods and general state of mind.

7. We have plenty on Bachman; this is just silly.
Lots of people have migraines and live very normal and otherwise healthy lives.

10. Yup. I had a supervisor who had frequent migraines.
She didn't like to take the meds unless she absolutely had to because they knocked her out as bad as the migraine. If she had to take them, she also took one or two days off of work. Even on days 3-4 she might be back at work but still not feeling like herself.

11. i get severe migraines 2 out of every 3 days, and i'd make a FAR better president than bachmann
i think it's actually easier for me to manage my migraines BECAUSE i now get them so frequently -- surrendering to them is simply not an option the way it was when i was younger and only got them a dozen times a year. over the years i've learned to focus on things other than the nausea and pain and live my life.

i think that's harder to do when the attacks are rare and feel abnormal. for me, migraines ARE normal, so why wouldn't i function normally even with one?

in any event, even if i WERE incapacitated for a few hours now and again, that's what a vice-president is for. the constitution tells us exactly how to handle this situation, so it's not really the problem people make it out to be.

besides, this whole illusion that the president needs to be superman is idiotic. every one has medical issues of one sort or another. bachmann's migraines are not a concern to me; her insanity and extreme political views are.

14. I get warnings of my migraines before they get severe. One or the other of
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 12:34 AM by 1monster
my hands will go numb. The numbness will crawl up my arm leaving my fingers and hand and arm as it goes up. Eventually, the numbness hits my tongue, disapates, then I get an aura.

As soon as I feel the numbness, I take two aspirin and 1000 mgs of niacin. This generally either stops the migraine or the migraine is very mild.

I started this routine after I had such a severe migraine that the blood vessels in the speech centers of my brain were so compressed that the speech centers were oxygen starved and I could not speak. I couldn't even remember how to speak. Wehn the doctor told me why I couldn't speak, I figured that aspirin thins the blood and niacin dilates the blood vessels making it easier for the blood flow to go where it needs to go.

Since that was probably the most terrifying medical emergency I've ever had, and since the doctor told me that such constriction could lead to a stroke, I decided to do my best to make sure it never happens again. So far, it has worked well for me.

Glad it works for you. I'm going to remember it for future reference. Imitrex is about $10.00 a pill and I'm uninsured.

17. Talk to your doctor... Ifhe okays it, try it. My doc says the aura is when the blood vessels are
constricted and the pain starts when they dilate. So I don't know why it works for me.

18. "The meds are as bad as the migraines." ?!?!!
You obviously have never had a migraine if you think the meds are as bad.
Everybody has different pain tolerances but if I didn't lay down in a dark quiet
place, the pain, vomiting and near syncopal fits would get me down.
