Murdoch settles a lot off lawsuits out of court.
Then they feel that they can continue the wrong doing because they did not lose the lawsuit. To me settling out of court is a admission of guilt, yet corporations like News Corp take it as they can just continue on with their illegal activities because they were not found guilty. Maybe some things should not be settled out of court so they can not continue.

not just with News Corp. Its where its foreseen that legal costs could become disproportionate and to nobody's advantage other than the lawyers concerned.

Union Carbide used one concerning the Bhophal disaster : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster
I'm guessing that US$470 million somewhat dwarfs current events.

3. But, of course
Settlements - confidential
Police investigations - confidential
Lawyer investigations - confidential

Internal investigations a company initiates against itself - not confidential

It seems clear to me that these are the tactics News Corp. has employed to avoid having to answer questions about their misdeeds.

5. These tactics are used by nearly all lawyers
to some extent. It's certainly not limited to certain geographical locations.
