12. The emperor has no clothes......
Maybe we should save this question until we actually go to the Moon?
Better yet it's been 42 years how about it NASA let's go back, just imagine the footage we would get this time, we actually have Color TV and even HD TV now, instead of that old black and white grainy (studio) footage we could see the astronaunts drive on the Moon in cystal clear resolution?

I mean back then computers were the size of buildings and now they are built into your phone which is no longer on your dining room table by the way but is now so small it can fit into you back pocket and with the press of button tell you where the nearest mall is located in the next town over and while at that mall with the press of another button can record a movie for you at home while you're out shopping.

So I ask, why is it that NASA is the only field of science that seems to have regressed over the last 42 year period?

Let's go back to the Moon for the first time!

13. NASA isn't science and it hasn't regressed
But America has.

NASA has long been one of the most important forces pushing technology forward. But that didn't guarantee the continuation of funding at the appropriate level. Blame Congress and the American people for that.

9. I was watching it on TV (only it was in French!) ...
I was watching it in the TV room of my Frat House in college. Only trouble was we were in way Upstate NY (Clarkson University) and in those days the only TV stations we got were from Montreal, and thus in French. We were watching Walter Cronkite do the narratiion, but his voice was reduced to nothing and the French translation was dubbed over him. It was a little annoying for us non French speakers.

10. I was at a rehearsal for "Gypsy."
Our summer theatre was preparing for the musical "Gypsy" in a 4-H cowbarn. We had a portable TV (it was a 9-inch Sony "Trinitron) and were all watching the moon-landing off and on. Needless to say, the rehearsal did not go well.

11. Other people's memories of that day fascinate me
Especially the ones who were children at the time.

Intellectually, of course I expect that. But on July 20th I feel like a young man again, working at a young agency, surrounded by other young people. The whole experience was so youthful and energetic, and the accomplishment was so amazing, despite my knowing intimately how much painstaking detailed work had gone into it. To be reminded how long ago it was brings me up short each time.

Not to mention how it was all allowed to fade away, how that magnificent foundation was abandoned. I certainly didn't expect that, at the time.

14. I was watching on my parents' B&W TV by myself
No one else in my family was interested enough to stay up and watch it. That mission took off on my seventeenth birthday so it felt special to me and I was sure they would be safe.

I grew up in Central Florida. When the Apollo tests started, Dad realized that we would be able to see the rockets from our house. He figured out the exact angle and where we had to stand and where to look to see them. The timing was just right that we could watch the launches on TV, run outside and see the trails of the rockets as they ascended over our neighbor's garage. With the very early morning launches, we could actually hear the rumble of the rockets, even though we we were about ninety miles away.

Somehow, we never managed to get to a launch, even being that close. I guess I always thought there would be more that I could go see. I hope there will be another opportunity in my lifetime to see a space launch.

16. I was at a diabetes summer camp run by UCLA students
We had just returned from a horseback ride in the rain when one of the camp counselors burst out of the cafeteria and yelled "they landed, they landed!" The clouds cleared enough that evening that I could cover the moon with my hand and know there were heroes in my grasp.

This was just two months after my dad died in a terrible plane crash in Los Angeles, and I was torn between the joy of the landing and wishing he were alive to witness it.

and sit down in front of the TV (which was an unusual command) as someday I would be grateful she made me do that.

I was 10 and not too keen on any of it but thought she just may have a point.

the entire camp including the counselors had our sleeping bags in the dining hall to witness the event.:hi:

ETA: we were singing songs in rounds, playing games, and then there was a general waking everyone up who might have fallen asleep to witness the event.
