News of the World journalists 'used terror tool to track celebrities'
News of the World journalists paid police officers to help them trace celebrities by tracking their mobile phone signal, it is being claimed.

The technique, known as ‘pinging’ in the paper’s newsroom, is generally used only in terrorist cases or serious criminal investigations.

Sean Hoare, a former reporter at the News of the World, had established the location of a contact in Scotland by using the technique, The New York Times alleged.

Mr Hoare said the information came through Greg Miskiw, a former news editor. He suspected it was obtained from the police.

‘If you were told to find someone, Greg would sort it out. It would cost £300,’ Mr Hoare told The Guardian.

8. How in the WORLD they can possibly claim that at this stage is beyond me.
Easy enough to bump off a man with a known problem with drugs and alcohol. I sure hope this isn't getting whitewashed.

10. When the police are part of the problem, it can truly shake your trust in their analysis
as to the cause of Hoare's death coming a week after he implicated them and days before Murdoch and Brooks were set to testify.

11. This is Hertfordshire Police : Not Metropolitan
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 12:25 PM by dipsydoodle
and what you may not understand is that the Met, Greater London, and surrounding police authorites are not necessarily the best of friends. I would doubt that my local police would do the Met any favours. This issue is local to me - about a mile from my house. Even our local paper says that the police were called because a neighbour became concerned for his well being. They also reported comments from neighbours about the fact that Hoare had a serious drinking problem and had also broken his nose and his foot in an accident with a marquee pole the week before. As far as I'm concerned this is just an unfortunate coincidence. The pathology report stated there were no 3rd parties involved. The toxicology report to determine exact cause of death will take a few weeks. Doubtless regardless of the results of the tests the conspiracy theorists here will persist.

Senior Met officer John Yates: I'm sure my phone was hacked

John Yates - one of the most senior officers in the Metropolitan Police - has said he was '99% certain' his phone had been hacked, as MPs grilled him about his decision not to reopen the investigation into the scandal.

(snip)

Mr Yates strongly denied allegations in the New York Times that he was put under pressure not to investigate phone hacking at the News of the World because of fears that the Sunday tabloid would publish details about his personal life.

If he's telling the truth about the former and lying about the latter, and over 12,000 peoples' phones were hacked, could it be possible that key people with the Hertfordshire Police Deopt. and/or coroner's office may have been hacked as well?

14. As far as I'm aware
our forensic pathology units were privatised years ago. The "local coroners office" won't be involved until the toxicology reports come back.

15. Ok then,
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 03:59 PM by Uncle Joe
"privatized pathology unit" either being hacked or compromised, the premise remains the same.

With over 12,000 peoples' phones being hacked, allegedly among them the most powerful in their field of law enforcement, the intimate connection between this journalistic corruption and political power, the discovery and exposing of these hacking cases being exceptionally slow, with only 170 so far, tied together with the cosmically convenient timing of Mr. Hoares' death should make for much skepticism.
