Detroit Free PressFormer U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, a Republican from Holland, announced this morning that he will file paperwork today with the Federal Elections Commission to establish a campaign committee to challenge Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow in 2012.
The move comes less than 24 hours after word spread across Michigan’s political landscape that Hoekstra had decided to reverse course from his decision a few months ago to not seek the GOP nomination. Sources told the Free Press and other media outlets Tuesday that an announcement from Hoekstra was imminent.
His entry gives the GOP a high profile candidate to challenge Stabenow after several other potential challengers, including former Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and U.S. Rep. Thad McCotter, said they would not run.
In a statement released this morning, Hoekstra said “After a good deal of reflection, I’ve decided that I cannot sit on the sidelines while the President and U.S. Senate mortgage our children and grandchildren’s future.”
