Why the Right Wing Uses Gun Metaphors and Other Hate Speech…

1.) From the beginning of the corporate media’s obsession with the Tea Party, one of their big challenges has been to amplify a relatively small movement’s size. Making a group frightening is a powerful psychological way of amplifying a group’s numbers. A group of 10 Hell’s Angels on motorcycles will seem much larger than a group of 20 people on bicycles.

2.) By identifying liberals as a target scapegoat group, anger can be redirected from the people who are causing the problems to those who are trying to solve the problem. Hate speech is key to anger redirection.

3.) In this economy, there are many, many angry, frightened people out there. Guns have always been used by frightened people to regain a sense of power. Gun metaphors attract the support of such people.

Inevitably, such hate speech will lead to violence. It has happened before and it will happen again. And every time, the Right denies any connection, tones it down for a few weeks, then escalates the rhetoric for the next round.

4. You must know there is a thin thin line between a fully automatic weapon

and a semi-automatic. Gun manufacturers have narrowed the gap and are proud to advertise it.
In a small crowd the difference is moot. Whether or not you can pull off 30 rounds in 10 seconds or 50 still leaves a lot of people dead.
I just want to know how long are we going to provide these weapons to the mentally incompetent?
