Senate GOP leadership aide: Obama killed 'Gang of Six' by embracing it
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 01:47 PM by ClarkUSA
Mike Allen:

--A Senate Republican leadership aide emails with subject line “Gang of Six”: “Background guidance: The President killed any chance of its success by 1) Embracing it. 2) Hailing the fact that it increases taxes. 3) Saying it mirrors his own plan.”

I'm not sure whether to say thank you to that leadership aide, or to say fuck you. I guess, both.

Yesterday, I said to numerous skeptics that this would be the inevitable outcome of President Obama's rather vague praise for this plan.

If President Obama is for it, Republicans will be against it. It's as easy as that. In other words, President Obama's rope-a-dope strategy is alive and well... and working.

Someone better tell Bernie Sanders, though. ;)

3. You're way too optimistic. This isn't rope a dope. It's exactly what he wants. But if it worked
great. Do I think this was his intention? Absolutely not. He has always pushed for a huge debt reduction bill.

4. If you are right? I will owe the President
an apology..and I will actually call back and apologize. I'm at my end (again) w/this guy---but if he's that smart at being one step ahead, then I will have been totally wrong in my reaction to his support for the "gangsta's proposal"
I hope you are right!

8. Why apologize? He wants these cuts. If it somehow foiled the plan, it is incidental

13. If he ends up winning this argument w/no cuts
as some who have a different perspective believe. I Hope I am wrong. I Hope I get to apologize.

14. "w/ no cuts"? Who said that? Pres. Obama has always wanted a simple debt ceiling hike but now...
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 04:10 PM by ClarkUSA
... Republicans want to play hardball, so that's what they're getting from President Obama now (in a strategic way).

BTW, in his SOTU, President Obama said he wanted to cut costs and fraud in Medicare and SS but not benefits. That's still his position since Republicans insist on making the debt ceiling a budget deal negotiation. He also refuses to sign a bill that doesn't raise revenue, so those who insist he would cave should eat some crow.

6. Bernie still needs to keep making noise
No matter whether rope-a-dope is alive and working or not, Bernie still needs to be heard.

I didn't think the Rs in the Senate were this effing crazy. :wow:

11. I agree. He's a good egg.
<< I didn't think the Rs in the Senate were this effing crazy. >>

It's scary, isn't it? The only thing that keeps me sanguine is knowing that the Koch Brothers are likely telling them that they'd better raise the debt ceiling before August 2.

9. I don't think it's a rope a dope strategy.
I think he's generally fine with larger cuts and smaller tax increases.

10. He needs to take this reverse psychology thing to the next level
and declare what a crushing defeat it would be to his reelection chances if he raised tax rates on the job creators.

15. While the country is on the brink of economic disaster the GOP plays politics.
Shame, shame!
