'MSNBC Live' interim host declines different timeslot at cabler

By SAM THIELMAN

After being dismissed from his 6 p.m. timeslot on "MSNBC Live," Cenk Uygur is ankling the network. Reps for the pundit has said that he will "discuss the truth surrounding his departure from MSNBC" tomorrow morning, but kept mum about the move this afternoon.

"We have decided to make a change at 6 p.m.," said a network spokesman. "It's unfortunate that Cenk has declined our offer to have him develop and host a program for another time slot."

Uygur's journey at MSNBC has been an anticlimactic one -- the founder of online news show "The Young Turks" made a very public bid for the network's 10 p.m. slot in 2009, writing in the Huffington Post that "I would like to announce my candidacy for the position" and promising to beat Greta Van Susteren in the ratings.

That has not been the case; Uygur has been listed as "interim host" at "MSNBC Live" since he started in the position earlier this year, without a bump in title or a change to the title of the show.

1. I had to look that usage up

Verb

(US, slang) To walk.
(cycling) To cyclically angle the foot at the ankle while pedaling, to maximize the amount of work applied to the pedal during each revolution.

4. Urban Dictionary specifically ties it to Variety as to quit a job
ankle 22 up, 39 down

1. To walk.

2. To quit one's job or place of employment.

This is movie industry slang, originally found in Variety, the long-time trade magazine of the film business in Hollywood.
1) Let's ankle over to Mary's party.
2) He ankled his job after fighting with the director.

2. A reference to a football (soccer) tackle where you aim at the player's ankles, not the ball?
ie being vicious.

8. In on the ground floor...so to speak.
Could pay off big in the future.

It would probably fit his style better because he's not afraid to use "colorful" language.

7. I have to give MSNBC credit for allowing any progressives on the air. Cenk was just too progressive
for them. Not surprised. Actually surprised he ever made it on there at all. Go Cenk.
