All he needs to do is assure our bond holders that he will pay the nation's debt service to them without a budget agreement. The full faith and credit of American bonds will be maintained with or without lifting the debt ceiling. Additionally, assure all members of the Armed Forces that they will continue to be paid and their security maintained.
Then, if the republicans block a debt ceiling raise, shut down other agencies of the government and furlough federal workers. Halt all government pension and SS checks until the republicans offer a plan that does not include cuts to medicare, medicaid, and social security.
I could foresee a democratic sweep in the 2012 elections with over 300 democratic house seats being won. The teaparty would die a quick and painful death and the American people would not have to go through this again for a long time; at least, as long as they remembered the 2011 budget crisis and the tea bagger circus.

All else is mere theater for the benefit of the players' sundry "bases." In other words, there is no real "battle." That's just part of the play's story arc.
