Deep sinkhole opens under woman's bed

The first step out of bed could have been a big one.

A woman in Guatemala City reports that a sinkhole, 40 feet deep and almost 3 feet across, opened under her bed Monday.

"When we heard the loud boom we thought a gas canister from a neighboring home had exploded, or there had been a crash on the street," Inocenta Hernandez, 65, said in an Agence France-Presse report.

"We rushed out to look and saw nothing. A gentleman told me that the noise came from my house, and we searched until we found it under my bed," AFP quotes Hernandez as saying.

The area is prone to sinkholes.

4. Doesn't it look like a well?
Aren't those bricks? Could they have built the house over a well and the subfloor rotted away and then the weakened tile collapsed?

9. That's my thought as well (so to speak)
A well or tunnel of some sort that was tiled over and forgotten, and eventually gave way?

8. Remember this one?

That one happened in 2010, http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070226-sinkhole-photo.html

I guess that's why Guatemala hasn't been a destination spot for expats. You just never know when you're going to fall down a 330 foot shaft.

14. Absolutely. It's like a nightmare brought to life.
Who could feel safe anywhere for miles and miles around it?

You could never feel it wouldn't happen again, when it never should have happened in the first place.

11. Is there any scientific explanation for why the sides of all these sinkholes are so smooth?
I've seen dozens of pictures and the comment about cleanly sheared tiles triggered the memory of almost smooth sides. It certainly looks as though there should be a rational explanation. I've often wondered where all the debris ends up too; a 40 foot deep * 3 foot diameter hole is 280 cubic feet of debris that had to end up somewhere.

Anyone know?

15. It's downright creepy. It happens over and over.
Found some other photos:

1. Devil’s Millhopper Geological State Park is home to this beautiful sinkhole that was formed when an underground cavern collapsed. Many fossils have been found in this sink, including shark teeth, marine shells and the remains of extinct animals. It is these bones that inspired the name “Devil’s Millhopper,” suggesting that the animals entered the sink on their way to meeting the devil.

2. The Great Blue Hole is an underwater sink hole located just off of Belize. It measures 984 feet across and 410 feet deep. Originally a limestone cave, this sinkhole was formed as the ocean level rose, collapsing the roof of the cave. Divers can see many types of tropical fish in this sinkhole, as well as a variety of sharks.

3. Venezuela houses several sinkholes, known as the Sarisarinama holes. These holes are approximately 382 yards wide by 382 yards deep. The origin of these sinkholes is unknown. Each one contains unique plants and animals that have been seen no where else in the world.

16. I don't get it either
I can't fathom how the soil underneath the floor could cut those floor tiles so smoothly and precisely
