What percentage of Americans is as liberal as DU?

If the country divided 50/50 or so, or 35/35 and some true independents are in the rest in middle, where does DU fall on that spectrum?

20. I think that's right.
DU polls more liberal than it posts. A lot of people, maybe most people, don't post much.

14. No, you read posts by mainstream liberal Democrats.
As opposed to ultra-left-never-happy-unless-they're-miserable types. Again: 84% of self-described liberals support Obama's job performance.

22. If you regularly check out the Greatest page, you'll see that the majority of sentiment here...
...is actually quite left. As someone said, though, what appears to be a strong conservative perspective usually comes from just a handfull of posters who you start to recognize very quickly for their "Third Way"/DLC viewpoint.

12. Not at all.
And my gut feeling is backed up by the fact that in opinion polls, 84% of self described liberals approve of Obama's job performance, whereas much of DU views him as terrible, too far right, etcetera, etcetra.

6. Labeling people is a little difficult these days.
False framing and political lies in this nation currently run too deep and there are many fooled people (probably a majority).

8. I think you need to point out specific issues...
War? Most of the U.S. is against continuing our current violent military adventures; thus most U.S. Americans are liberal.

Universal health care? Most of the U.S. is for it; thus most U.S. Americans are liberal.

No cuts to Social Security & Medicare? Most of the U.S. rejects cuts; thus most U.S. Americans are liberal.

Increasing taxes on the rich? Most of the U.S. agrees that the rich are not paying their fair share; thus most U.S. Americans are liberal.

The right to unionize and collectively bargain? Most of the U.S. is on the side of unions; thus most U.S. Americans are liberal.

10. 173,294 user registrations, so do the math

If you go with 35% of the total population (of 308,000,000) as liberals you get 107,800,000 of us.

then 173,294/107,800,000 = 0.00160 (= 0.16%)

with these numbers we represent about 0.16% of liberals.

Do some others agree with us even though they are not registered here, yes. Therefore there is clearly some inaccuracy in this equation. I would also suggest that not all the registrations here represent one liberal, some might be trolls and others may have more than one account. We can argue about the inaccuracies forever and never come to an agreement but there you have it, some basic math to start from.

17. 173,294 user registrations doesn't reflect reality.

Who knows what the total population of Democratic Underground really is?

How many are socks?

How many have left?

How many have been expunged?

How many have registered but never use the site?

25. At least half of the Democratic voters are, by today's terms, very liberal
When you think about it anyone today that is as far right as Richard Nixon is considered a flaming liberal. So who's to say what percentage of what is what?

26. Moderates are by far the most dominant block in politics. That group likely
contain up to 45% of voters across it's breath. My sense is that liberals, in particular extreme left liberals are no larger than the extreme right.
