Wildfires burn up state's entire $5 million budget

PHOENIX (AP) - Fighting summer wildfires is expensive. The state burned through nearly all of the $5 million in its budget to fight fires that tore through Arizona forests and grasslands in May and June.

State Forester Scott Hunt tells The Arizona Republic the state may have to dip into the fiscal 2012 budget to help cover final costs of the firefighting effort.

The bill could have been higher if federal grants had not covered about 75 percent of the state's costs.

We have had some bad fires in California. Cost us a lot to fight them, and that contributed to some extent to our financial problems.
