Man falls 3 stories while 'free running' in Tempe

TEMPE, AZ (KPHO) - A 19-year-old man has been hospitalized with a life-threatening head injury after he fell three stories while "free running" at a Tempe apartment building.

Tempe police said John Martin fell about 3:30 a.m. from the fourth floor at 111 E. Lemon St. in Tempe while engaging in the urban acrobatics.

Another witness said the MCC student was on the railing near the fourth floor stairwell when he slipped, hit his head on the rail, then fell four floors while striking each set of stairs on the way down, ultimately coming to rest on some ground floor planters.

I also did a search for ~"free running" accidents~ at YouTube. Oh man! I could only watch for a minute. Intense.

7. Let me explain this to you, from a guy who spent his first 22 years in Phx/Tempe

In the summer there is absolutely not a fucking thing to do in the Desert except to try to create something fun to do. (unless you have money) So kids get themselves in very bad situations trying to relieve the boredom.

15. Free running & parkour are amazing.

I'd never heard of it before a few months ago, and was glued to YouTube watching everything I could find.

I'd much rather see these kids training for that, keeping fit and active, than hanging around playing video games and being bored -- the same way I loved watching talented kids doing some amazing break dancing in the city.

Obviously, these activities take skill, training, and practice and do NOT mix with alcohol.

And, of course, there is one kind of parkour I can watch without my heart in my throat --
