New poll carries warning signs for Obama in 2012
"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A poll released on Wednesday carried warning signs for President Barack Obama's re-election chances in 2012.
The Public Policy Polling survey found that for the first time since July, Obama does not lead Republican front-runner Mitt Romney in the group's monthly national poll on the 2012 election race. Romney has pulled into a tie with Obama at 45 percent.
Obama's overall approval rating was at 46 percent, with 48 percent of voters disapproving of him, and this is in line with other recent surveys."

1. Understood.
Obama does face a tough re-election battle next year because the economy continues to suck. We will ALL have to work very hard and tirelessly to get him to the 270 electoral votes he will need to win a second term (regardless of whom the Republicans put up).

17. Then don't complain later....
...if you think there's no difference between Obama and the tea-baggers, you're in a for a very ugly awakening. You talk just like the Nader voters did back in 2000 and look at the disaster it caused.

2. At This Time In 2003...............
...............there were about 4 different Democrats who all had MASSIVE leads over Bush in these polls. The problem is that the general public knows nothing about Mitt Romney other than the superficial stuff (he's a Republican and he's promising free kittens for everyone). Just wait until some digging gets done and some dirt gets revealed. Romney has about as much chance of winning in 2012 as Bob Dole did in 1996. And the results will look about the same.

6. This is why 'generic republican' polls so well against Obama. The less someone knows...
about a candidate the easier it is for them to project desirable characteristics on that candidate.

5. The Real Election Battles Next Year Will Be Down Ticket...
The wreckage the teabaggers and rushpublicans are doing in Congress and at the state level is what is energizing many Democrats next year...and in some very key states. There'll be a referendum on union busting in Ohio and a recall in Wisconsin not to mention all the Congressional races where Medicare will be a very big issue. President Obama will benefit from this undercurrent as well as a rushpublican party ruptured and unfocused. No matter who their presidential nominee is it will piss off a significant part of the "base"...and that could mean rushpublicans staying home in some key House races.

10. we're late to that party but hopefully not too late. i guess many
of us did not believe the lengths to which repubs would go to steal elections. i know i didn't expect that much deceit or mean-spiritedness from repubs.

i hope florida's dem party gets it together.

7. This poll stuff is all silly to me
I remember Bush running around with 20 percent approval and he got re-elected. If Obama is at 45 plus, I think he is in great shape.

14. Bush's Approval At Election Time Hovered Around Fifty Percent
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 10:55 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Which is essentially the percentage of the pop vote he received. Approval and voting percentages are highly correlated. Who votes for someone they don't approve of?

Now, your opponent can be so unpalatable that that folks will vote for you even they disapprove of you because he or she is worse.

15. I don't remember his being that high
but I looked it up and it was around high forties and fifty depending on the poll. I am not worried though.

I do not care whether he gets re-elected or not. My concern are the Democrats in Congress.

19. How is Romney different from Obama? No wonder they are neck and neck.
You could flip a coin to decide your vote, and end up with the same person. Wall street loves both of them equally as well.
