A Malden (Mass.) man is being charged with seriously injuring his 7-week-old baby.
The baby’s grandmother is worried sick over the condition of her grandson Carmello Sears, the victim of a brutal assault at the hands, police say, of his father, 33-year-old Carlos Edwards, who is under arrest.
“He’s just a perfect little baby and I hope that everything is okay,” said the grandmother.
Edwards is facing two charges: Assault and battery on a baby and assault and battery with a deadly weapon after he allegedly slammed his child, Carmello Sears, on the concrete behind a home on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say Edwards and the baby’s mother, 23-year-old mother, Crystal Sears, were arguing outside 197 Cross St. in Malden Wednesday afternoon when Edwards allegedly picked the baby up and slammed him into the ground, shattering his little body against the concrete sidewalk.
Carmello is in serious condition at Massachusetts General Hospital. The grandmother said doctors are watching swelling in the baby’s brain to see if Carmello will need surgery. She says that he has two fractures to his head.
“We just have to keep praying and hopefully this baby will be fine because this baby didn’t deserve any of this and I can’t even imagine how someone would do this,” said the grandmother.
