Another miserable day for Murdoch. A quick write-up of today's top stories for your viewing pleasure

Police from a 2006 investigation "Operation Motorman" turned their files over to the phone hacking investigation. It contains 3522 cases where the police found the media to be in possession of illegal information gleaned from blagging, hacking, tapping....God knows where they got it all. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/21/phone-hacking-operation-motorman-files

The New York Times has an article showing that hacking was widespread. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/21/world/europe/21london.html?_r=1&src=recg

News Corp has lost its partnership with the Olympics. This would have given them exclusive contact with the British athletes. News International dropped by Olympics partner after hacking scandal http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/jul/21/news-international-olympics-hacking

One of the biggest new stories, if true, means phone hacking was still going on last year. Here is a snippet:
"David Cameron is to examine allegations that a senior government official was subjected to "disgraceful and illegal" phone hacking and hostile media briefing while Andy Coulson was Downing Street's director of communications". http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/20/mandarin-phone-hacked-coulson-downing

James Murdoch continues to be in hot water. His "payouts" were "payoffs" and he knowingly OK'd them. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/20/james-murdoch-gordon-taylor-payoff

One of the biggest things is that Murdoch's minions have stopped paying the legal fees of Glenn Mulcaire. He is probably named in every one of the lawsuits against News Corp
and up until now newscorp paid his legal fees so he wouldn't have to say anything. Once this man starts talking things will totally blow up. Though, I'm sure, he has been offered secret money. He also got the message loud and clear from Sean Hoare showing up dead. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/20/glenn-mulcaire-legal-fees-terminated

FOr those of you who missed it: in the carpark next to the spot where Rebekah Brooks lives they found a garbage bag with notes and a laptop inside the dumpster. Security called the police and just before they get there guess who shows up to claim the bag. Rebekah Brooks husband. He swore it was a mixup and that the computer is his and his alone, not his wife's and she had nothing to do with it. The police refused to return it. He is freaking out about it while he waits. My guess is it is either the computer she used at home OR it is his and he was afraid the police were going to take all the computers in the house...he must have something in it he didn't want either his wife or the police to see. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/18/mystery-bag-bin-rebekah-brooks

The Guardian is saying James Murdoch was "mistaken" in his words to Parliament. "Just by way of clarification relating to Tuesday's CMS Select Committee hearing, we would like to point out that James Murdoch's recollection of what he was told when agreeing to settle the Gordon Taylor litigation was mistaken.

In fact, we did inform him of the "for Neville" email which had been produced to us by Gordon Taylor's lawyers." http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/jul/21/phone-hacking-scandal-live-coverage 6:47

The missing and implicated News Of the World editor has turned up in Florida and is returning to England to answer questions (and probably be arrested) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8652962/Phone-hacking-missing-News-of-the-World-executive-Greg-Miskiw-to-fly-to-UK-for-police-talks.html

Wow...this heavily implicates Cameron. I've been saying all along that he was going to have to step down over all this! Phone hacking: disgraced News of the World chiefs 'may have held talks at No 10 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8651259/Phone-hacking-disgraced-News-of-the-World-chiefs-may-have-held-talks-at-No-10.html

And this: The right-hand man of the Prime Minister had hacked info on the PM's political enemies. If he shared the info with Cameron....well...goodbye Cameron. Phone hacking: Andy Coulson behind hacking of senior official's phone, says Labour MP
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8651268/Phone-hacking-Andy-Coulson-behind-hacking-of-senior-officials-phone-says-Labour-MP.html

And last but not least: News Corp could face civil action in the United States over phone hacking http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8650697/News-Corp-could-face-civil-action-in-the-United-States-over-phone-hacking.html

OK...I have to think of a lurid headline and post this. Enjoy!

4. I found this statement revealing...
FOr those of you who missed it: in the carpark next to the spot where Rebekah Brooks lives they found a garbage bag with notes and a laptop inside the dumpster. Okay, so who contacted Ms. Brooks' husband?

6. He came back to the dumpster to get it and it was gone
so he asked security if they had it and they did.

So...he threw it away and then realized he probably shouldn't have done it next door to his house so he ran back to get it and it was too late.

Since there was no ID on the computer they wouldn't give it to him since he couldn't prove it was his.

7. Yes...the message from News Corp has been clear
News of the World was not killed because it did something wrong. It got killed because they got caught. That message probably rang loud and clear to all other News Corp outlets...get caught and we'll close down the paper and all your friends are out of work.

The fact that two whistleblowers relating to this story are already dead. Mulcaire must be scared to death. The police are all implicated...who is there to keep him safe? He can't even go into police hiding.

8. Police seek computer passwords of Rebekah Brooks's husband
Detectives are checking the contents of the two computers found in a carpark near the riverside home of Rebekah Brooks, the News International chief executive who resigned over phone hacking.

Police have asked for passwords to the laptop and iPad, claimed by Brooks's husband, Charlie, to belong to him. They are understood to be examining the computers's contents to establish whether they contain any evidence relevant to the criminal investigation of phone hacking at News International.
...
"Police have been in touch and have asked for the passwords," Wilson said. "Charlie was hoping it would be returned before now but he is adamant that ... it is his computer and that there is nothing on it that is Rebekah's and nothing that has anything to do with the case.

10. Hey Muriel....I saw that! To prove it is his he has to give the password...
but if they have the password they can get into the computer.

Brooks must be an idiot.

What else have you got for us today? You have linked some GREAT stories on this topic!

24. Well, the "James Murdoch 'mistaken'" story you found in the Guaridan live coverage is now 'misled'
James Murdoch misled MPs, say former NoW editor and lawyer

Colin Myler and Tom Crone challenge News Corp executive's statement to MPs at phone-hacking hearing

James Murdoch has been accused of misleading the parliamentary select committee this week in relation to phone hacking, igniting yet another fire for the embattled News International boss to extinguish.

In a highly damaging broadside, two former News of the World senior executives claimed the evidence Murdoch gave to the committee on Tuesday in relation to an out-of-court settlement to Gordon Taylor, chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association, was "mistaken".

The statement came as something of a bombshell to the culture, sport and media select committee, which immediately announced it would be asking Murdoch to explain the contradiction.

19. The real fun part of the original story was that the cleaner
threw the bag in the garbage dump. Which cleaner would not take the dumped computer home. The Brooks read too many Agatha Christie novels.

Lil Jimmy should end up in prison along with Brooks and Cameron will soon be gone - there's too much there there.

This is Murdochgate in every sense of Watergate and more...and we haven't touched the US yet.

15. Nice analysis...
He is freaking out about it while he waits. My guess is it is either the computer she used at home OR it is his and he was afraid the police were going to take all the computers in the house...he must have something in it he didn't want either his wife or the police to see.

I didn't think of that scenario but it makes sense. He knew police would seize computers at the house so he gave his to a friend to hold until after the initial search of the home. That would explain the strange bit about the wrong place in the garage.

Thanks for a clever analysis!

It feels so delicious to have Murdoch et al squirming. I had been wishing for the last year that 'our right-wing government would get into some awful scandal'; and so they did - our REAL right-wing government! And with any luck their minions such as Cameron will also be damaged.

Of course, it's not just the Murdoch empire, though they're the biggest. I hope that the Daily Hate-Mail and other nasty media are exposed too!

On the other hand, it may be a one-week wonder and things soon get back to 'normal'. But I hope not.
