3. I'm on the second floor with only a fan. The room is 100 degrees at 10:55 pm.
All I have is the fan, several bottles of cold water, and a spritzer of cold water. I can't remember it being so hot after the sun went down.

8. it's usually not... Hot Nights and High Humidity Set This Heat Wave Apart
By Andrew Freedman

My colleague Heidi Cullen has an excellent op-ed in the New York Times today on the current heat wave, and the shifting notion of what constitutes a "normal climate" as average global temperatures continue to warm. She didn't have room for details on the heat wave in that story, but it's worth doing so here given its important lessons for climate change adaptation efforts, particularly concerning public health and infrastructure.

The heat wave that is currently roasting much of the United States stands out from typical summertime heat events that we expect to occur during July and August. First of all, the hot weather, which is associated with a sprawling area of high pressure, covers a huge expanse. Today, for example, at least 141 million people under heat advisories or warnings, according to a tweet from NOAA spokesman Justin Kenney (see video below).

Second, the heat wave has featured an extraordinary combination of high temperatures and humidity. In combination, these are known as the heat index, and during this heat wave the heat indices have shot up to levels more commonly seen in the brutally hot and humid region near the Red Sea, rather than in Minnesota and South Dakota. As meteorologist Paul Douglas reported on his Minneapolies Star Tribune blog, the heat index in Moorhead, Minn. hit a whopping 134°F yesterday, likely setting a new record for the highest heat index ever reported in Minnesota. The Twin Cities also tied its all-time heat index record, at 119°F.

10. I feel for you... How on earth can you sleep llike that?
Edited on Thu Jul-21-11 10:03 PM by hlthe2b
Lots of residences and high rise condos in Denver only have "swamp coolers" (evaporative coolers that drop the temp 10-12 degrees). They work great when temps are below the 90s, but not so much in these excruciatingly high temps... Still, the nights do usually get down to a level that the coolers will do the job.

I can deal with being cold, but overly hot is just the worst. We are in the deep kimchee, I fear. If you have elderly friends/relatives/acquaintances, please check on them. They are so vulnerable.

15. Couple of things.
I'm used to heat/humidity with just a fan b/c that's how I was raised as a child. It's a matter of conditioning.

I also am mindful of the inherent dangers of excessive heat, so I keep ice water in the frig at all times. I alternate cold showers with the cold water spritzer and let the fan dry it off.

I don't necessarily want air conditioning. What I'd really like is a big metal tub with a couple blocks of ice in front of the fan at full tilt.

26. I sleep between two huge damp bath sheet towels
with the fan blowing, and a smaller damp towel across the pillow. Also use Mineral Ice. The goal is to lower the body temperature so you can fall asleep.

6. Just like cold weather in the winter doesn't mean climate change is bullshit, hot weather in the
summer doesn't mean that we're all going to die. It's hot, its summer, we're surrounded by high pressure. Climate Change is real, but this isn't what it looks like.

Your link doesn't work.

Yes, it's heating up, but one hot summer streak doesn't mean it's suddenly the end of the world. Last winter was pretty damn cold and we had a lot of snow, that doesn't mean global warming is a hoax either.

38. WHich is what the OP said
and why I posted the current map, the predictive map, and the trend from NOAA.

It is a La Nina year ignores the TREND... and is the excuse used by those who deny it. You might not be denying it, but the last ten years show a clear trend that the science is correct and it is time to stop making excuses and start getting serious. We are way past the point of getting serious.

By the way I expect el rushbo to tell us how this is not real, when during the winter we have worst snow storms, again predicted by the damn science.

Drink lots of lemon water, unsweetened if you can, the lemons contain the salt that you need. Carry water everywhere, don't leave home without it.

I wore a wet scarf around my neck, in front of the fan it stayed cold, gauzy cotton is the best for this. I kept a wet scarf around my neck & shoulders.

Also I filled the bathtub with cold water (I put sea salt in it so it stayed fresh) and got in it periodically to cool myself down.

Good luck~~
