Rahm walks out and chastizes reporter for asking if his children went to public schools!
This was stunning. The outrage in his eyes when the impertinent peasant asked him an off
limits question was stunning

The interview was supposed to focus on a new Emanuel initiative – the creation of an Office for New Americans – but I crammed in questions on labor, Mayor Daley’s union negotiations, and more. But when his press secretary Tarrah Cooper said time was up just 10 minutes into what was scheduled as a 20 minute interview, I tossed him the school question.

Similar to his former boss, Emanuel said it's a private decision.

While I appreciate the desire for privacy, I tried to explain that the Mayor’s family is now in the public eye as Chicago's First Family, and that the public would want to know whether Emanuel is confident enough in the public school system to send his own children there. But Emanuel broke in.

“Mary Ann, let me break the news to you. My children are not in a public position,” he said, curtly. “I am. You’re asking me a value statement and not a policy. … No, no, you have to appreciate this. My children are not an instrument of me being mayor. My children are my children, and that may be news to you, and that may be new to you, Mary Ann, but you have to understand that I’m making this decision as a father.”The mayor stood up to leave.

This is a legitimate question in Chicago because the mayors office has appropriated the public school board and appointed members instead of allowing the people to elect school board members. For record I do not think people who do not have children in public schools should be running them. Many of them want to see public schools fail. He sends his kids to the University of Chicago lab school! The UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO LAB SCHOOL? That is the the school that nurtured Milton Friedman and the Shock doctrine. Why would anyone trust such a person to nurture the public schools.

what is happening in chicago is that a guy who hates public schools has appropriated their school boards from the election process, and he sends his kids to a school that openly detest them.

Furthermore the alternative to rahm is not a republican, it is a better democrat. Chicago has a jungle primary, where republicans are irrelevant.

8. only people elected to the school board should run them
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 02:16 AM by dameocrat67
and a requirement for election should be that they have children in them, just like you have to be 40 to be president. Rahm is already bitching about taxes and laying off teachers while he appropriates the formally democratically elected school board with appointments like Penny Prizker another elite public school hater.

17. There's another interpretation.
If you don't have kids, if your kids are too young or too old to be in them, I don't think that should disqualify you. I don't see that as an implication of the post you're responding to.

But if you have school-aged kids and actively avoid the public schools that you have some control over, then there's a serious problem. You're saying that they suck--that *you* suck--and that you just don't think that your citizens' kids are really worth a crap. Certainly not your effort.

al-Rahman basically told all parents with their kids in crappy schools to go f themselves. "I'm the decider, how dare you impugn my glory and say that my personal decisions should in any way reflect on my professional wonderfulness. If I want to be a royal hypocrite, I'm al-Rahman, I'm al-Rahim, it's my universe. I am ineffable but you are certainly quite f-able. O peons mine, bit players on my stage, toddle off and learn your roles, 'kay?"

15. It's not fake outrage; he's truly pissed being questioned.
Like so many others in positions of power, Rahm doesn't believe he needs to answer to anyone. The use of the word "peasant" in the OP was not as hyperbolic as it should be, more's the pity.

10. He think's he's above being held accountable in any way
And you make an excellent point about The U. of Chicago Lab School. Thanks for posting that information.

Instead of turning over in his grave, Milton Friedman must be celebrating. His destructive ideas from hell have now become accepted by too many top "Dems" - who'd have thought this 30 years ago - and will play a major part in destroying this country. And "leaders" like Rahm are doing their part to help.

12. ABC reported that tuition is $25,000 per child per year.
Rahm has 3 kids enrolled, so that makes $75,000 a year. :wow:

16. here is a good oped on the matter
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/ct-met-rahm-emanuel-childrens-school-20110722,0,3786172.story

Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis, who has objected to Emanuel's plans to withhold teacher pay raises and change work rules, issued a less-than-subtle statement about the mayor's decision.

"We understand why he would choose a school with small class sizes; a broad, rich curriculum that offers world languages, the arts and physical education; a focus on critical thinking, not test-taking; a teacher and an assistant in every elementary classroom; and paid, high-quality professional development for their teacher," Lewis said. "It's wonderful that he has that option available to him."

Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 03:28 PM by dameocrat67
unless your going to say they send them to suburban public schools that makes no sense since they dont make enough even for catholic schools.

i am deeply skeptical of your claim, though this is the common wisdom of the upper middle class daleycrat.

Average wage for a CPS teacher is $70k. They got enough money for catholic schools.
