On CNN, now, Rep. Robert Brady proposing restrictions on SYMBOLS & Speech
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 04:35 PM by hlthe2b
He will propose legislation to extend the current prohibitions against threats (including threatening language AND SYMBOLS) that currently exists for the President to members of Congress.

It will be interesting to see what support he gets from worried REPUBLICANS.... He damned well ought to get plenty.

1. Robert Brady is a Democrat.
REP before his name stands for Representative, not Republican.

10. I corrected... including the conclusion I drew... what more
would you like? a pound of flesh? I was listening to CNN on XM. The interviewer incorrectly introduced him as a Republican. I corrected as quickly as I saw your correction. What the hell more can I do, VO? What? Do you NEVER make errors, especially when the media does so as your source?

and wondering whether it made a difference.

Your rudeness is really inappropriate. I corrected the error which was based on how the CNN person introduced him. I was listening, not watching.

8. Could you kindly drop the snark. I corrected based on the error CNN
themselves verbally committed when they introduced him. I corrected the post. You really don't need to get nasty with a fellow DUer who has never been anything but polite to you.

27. Here are some details and a link...
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/136895-dem-planning-bill-that-would-outlaw-threatening-lawmakers

Rep. Robert Brady (D-Pa.) reportedly plans to introduce legislation that would make it a federal crime to use language or symbols that could be perceived as threatening or inciting violence against a federal official or member of Congress.

Brady told CNN that he wants federal lawmakers and officials to have the same protections against threat currently provided to the president. His call comes one day after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was shot, along with 19 other people, at a public event in Tucson. A suspect is currently in custody.
--snip--

Brady singled out the map as the type of rhetoric he opposed.

"You can't put bull's-eyes or crosshairs on a United States congressman or a federal official," he said.

However, a Palin spokeswoman denied Sunday that the image was intended to depict gun sights. Palin offered condolences to the Giffords family and other victims of the shooting on her Facebook page Saturday.

"The rhetoric is just ramped up so negatively, so high, that we have got to shut this down," Brady said.

"The president is a federal official," Brady told CNN in a telephone interview. "You can't do it to him; you should not be able to do it to a congressman, senator or federal judge."

30. There are already prohibitions against threats.
We should avoid knee-jerk attempts to restrict ANY political speech that is not clearly and obviously a threat. If that were the case, how many people would have gone to jail for burning Bush in effigy?

We can publicly condemn offensive political rhetoric without giving authoritarians the ability to interpret and punish symbolic speech.
