Facebook to get age bans (18), parent control?

Australian attorneys-general are today discussing extra measures to protect children using Facebook, including age verification, even possibly a lock-out for under 18s and a requirement for parental access to children's accounts.

Facebook does have a minimum age limit; however, this is set at 13 years of age, and does not have any verification process tied to it.

"Age verification is something that various platforms deal with, and I can't see why it should be beyond the wit of Facebook to do the same thing, if that was the solution people wanted," he said.

An options paper to be considered by the attorneys-general would consider the merits of raising the age limit to 18 years of age, and also requiring a method to verify this.

1. No one does serious age verification.

All they ask is your birthday or if you're over 18. The answer is yes. :shrug:

There's nothing they can do unless they are going to send someone to your house to check ID.

3. I didn't even know they had age minimum already...

My 10 year old daughter is going to Europe for 3 weeks with her grandparents and we thought an easy way for her to keep everyone updated on her trip and show pictures was to set up a facebook account for her (to be promptly deleted or made inactive upon her return). But when I put in her actual birth date is said she was not allowed to use facebook.

I could have lied but I just didn't want to. We'll go with good old e-mail instead.

4. Instead of the government mandating age verification

How about parents take the time to do so - there's plenty of tools in place to keep track of what they do. It's no ones fault but their own for being too lazy to take an interest.
