Emanuel's children going to private school this fall
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his wife have decided to forgo Chicago public schools and send their children to the University of Chicago Lab School in Hyde Park this fall, a source familiar with the decision has told the Tribune.

Leah, Ilana and Zach will be going to the same school once attended by Barack and Michelle Obama's daughters Sasha and Malia, the source said.

"This is what you have to respect. I live in public life. I'm a father to three great children and that's a private life," Emanuel said at a news conference a few weeks ago."My children get me as a parent, not as the mayor. So it's a decision Amy and I will make. We'll do (what) is best for them as children and their education."

>snip

"If I use my kids education in any political context I'd be less of a father than I want to be," Emanuel said. "So it's a personal matter. It's a private issue. It's a decision Amy and I will make as parents, not her as a mother and me as mayor."

2. Interesting choice...Just like Christie
He gave the same response that Christie gave when he was attacked for sending his kids to private school. He is a public official to 99.99999% of the population, but to his kids, he is dad. He has every right to do this. He will still be paying his property taxes that will go to the public schools. So public schools will have 3 fewer students, but just as much money. Which means more money to spend for each student. Yeah, I know, it's not much, but it helps.

4. The issue is not that he is doing it so much as how incensed he got at even being asked
Obama and other presidents have answered the question civilly, he did not

3. Public progressive / Private republican
Rahm is typical of the Democratic leaders we have these days. They are tainted by special interests and money so badly that they speak publically as progressives, but act substantially as conservatives.

10. And we have the right to point out the basic hypocrisy of his choice..
One choice for his own kids, another choice on his part for everyone else's kids.

If he truly believed his own rhetoric about schools then he would send his own children to the schools he spends so much time flapping his lips about.
