MPR: Franken: Defense of Marriage Act ‘an injustice’
http://minnesota.publicradio.org/display/web/2011/07/20/franken-defense-of-marriage-act/
A U.S. Senate committee held hearings Wednesday about repealing the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, also known as DOMA.

The law denies federal recognition of states' same-sex marriages and civil unions. DFL Sen. Al Franken was at the Judiciary Committee hearing and said it was time to scrap the measure.

"DOMA is an injustice," Franken said. "It is an immoral and discriminatory law. Our nation was founded on the premise that all people are created equal and that all persons should receive equal treatment under the law."

Franken also sparred with a witness from the conservative group Focus on the Family. He said the witness misrepresented government studies about the impact of growing up in a household with same-sex parents.

1. I hope the momentum is strong enough to get this repeal through
both houses of Congress. It's long past time for DOMA to disappear.

Thanks, Al! You keep giving me reasons to be glad I campaigned for you in my precinct. I managed to change some people's minds and get them to the polls to vote for you.

2. What will happen with recognition in other states?
Will states that have banned marriage equality in their states have to recognize same sex marriages from other states? Or will it have to be decided upon by the SC when and if a couple challenges it?
