'Lazy' unemployed person: I kept a log of all the jobs I've applied to, it's 70 pages long |
|
I was jobless for two years, from December 2008 to December 2010. I knew my number was up because in my job I was assigned 2 accounts (customers) and both of them went away. My company had been on a several year run of RIFs and we all knew there was another one imminent. It was not a good time to lose customers, with managers walking the halls looking for people to lay off. I suppose there was karma at work—while in management positions within this same company I had to lay off half-a-dozen people myself.
I truly felt that there was age discrimination at work, but it was insidious, not obvious. As my jobless period got longer and longer, I was beginning to see that unemployed bias, as if employers were saying “You’ve not found a job in 18 months? You must not be worth hiring…”. That was never stated, just always below the surface.
I kept a job pursuit log, that was half statement of fact (company name/location, job title, where I learned about job, status) and half diary. I believe it wound up being a 70 page Word doc.

When getting a job is on par with the lottery, maybe it's time to consider an employer of last resort, let's bring back the CCC and the WPA. Because this is just insanity.

3. Our Constitution begins with "We the people..." |
|
However our representatives do not represent "We the people..." any longer. Our representatives represent the enterprises that employ the lobbyists (read salesman) that bribed our representatives to represent said enterprise, instead of us. I wonder what kind of and how much deferred payment Obama will receive in 2016?

4. My husband's log was 150 for a year |
|
Well, we lived in the NYC area. He was a programmer, but went out on jobs for store clerks, janitors, Home Depo, etc. The low level jobs all told him we was "over-qualified". One supermarket manager told him that after they "trained" him (to stock shelves???), he would just quit when something better came along. Home Depo told him he was "overweight". Hmm. At 6'1" and 210 lbs, maybe a little, but I have seen OBESE people working there. Age discrimination? In his 50s, I am sure of that one.
He had to move out of state to find a job, unfortunately. I had to quit mine to move. In hindsight, maybe I should have kept my job and stayed there.
Other than taxing these corporations which run and hire their people from India, China, Mexico, which the clowns in DC will NEVER do, maybe we do need to bring back the CCC and WPA. Unfortunately, the Teabaggers don't want public workers period. Everthing has to be a FOR PROFIT BUSINESS. Government, can't and will never be, a for profit business.

5. It's probably too late now, but did your husband contact the EEOC? |
|
What he was told reeks of discrimination.

He thought of the age discrimination, but he was very much hidden between the lines.

8. What a horrible story! |
|
And, sadly, an all too common and familiar one.

6. OMG, getting a job is on par with winning the lottery...... |
|
I SO sympathize with that one.....hell, I thought I was the ONLY ONE feeling that way! And the odds of getting a LIVING WAGE job, with a set schedule (as opposed to all of those "flexible" schedule jobs...) feels impossible!
You're right, this is just insanity!
In Solidarity,
T.

10. Hmmm.....try being in your late 60s and a woman. |

The demoralization is amazing. I find myself blaming myself for being lazy, but I've sent in many many resumes, with no response. I read the adds for jobs....multi task, high energy, go getter....on and on and I just get tired. Read between the lines and see young gullible exploitable....able to do the job of about 4 or 5 people and able to be fooled into thinking there actually is a career path.
I'm reliable, loyal, have not flitted from job to job, have a sterling employment record, but nothing.
