2. You would need to define 'welfare' first. Are you talking about WIC, TANF, housing, etc.?

5. I would assume he means anything that goes to help brown people.
Since he keeps saying "urban" and points to places like Camden, NJ, that has a high minority population.

8. Yes, "urban" means blacks aka "welfare queens"
that is the shibboleth of conservatives.

3. Welfare, as it used to be known, came out LBJ.
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 03:09 PM by XanaDUer
there is now, work fare.

The US statistical abstract is a good starting point for stats in the US:

Again, there is no longer welfare

4. OK. I guess Im not really sure then...
I am discussing with someone who is ECSTATIC about the fact that Florida is going to drug test welfare recipients. He acts as if all welfar recipients are "urban" but I am pretty sure I know exactly what that means. I am not the best at arguing this stuff. I tend to get a bit too emotional. You guys are soooo smart. Oh and corporate welfare is ok cause they are the "backbone of our economy" whereas the poor people that get"welfare" or "free money" as he calls it are just leaches on society and contribute nothing to society.

I know where you are coming from. I DO argue with these yutzes off of DU.:

TANF has replaced AFDC. This is the page with the stats. Be prepared to hear it has a liberal biases from the idiot you are trying to show facts to, but that is another story:

:eyes:

Anyway~

http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ofa/character/FY2003/indexfy03.htm

http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/7Welfare.htm

Then the problem becomes - what defines a "rural" area versus an "urban" area? There are different definitions of what constitutes this - is it an MSA - a Metropolitan Statistical Area? Is it micropolitan? Etc.

TOTALLY expect, no matter what you flood them with, you will never convince them. Don't waste your time, unless you enjoy arguing with the. You'll know you've hit a sore spot when they just disappear. That's how they deal with cognitive dissonance. Good luck, though, and keep your good heart! :hi:

17. You're welcome
I feel bad b/c I know you are fighting the good fight. However, "arguing" with them is hard, since RWers never have real demographic data to back their crazy-ass shit up. Like, what they call "welfare" are block grants to the states from the Fed. The state can set limits on how to distribute them. So, it is difficult to break stuff down to the level a RWer would understand since, as we know, liberalism has a complex, reality-based context, and RW ideology consists of short, bumper-sticker-type ideas that appeal to emotions.

9. About the Florida situation
I keep hearing about how the right wingers are so excited that the leaches will finally get kicked off of welfare because they will now be drug tested......

well the joke will be on them. Drug testing has been around for quite some time for purposes of employment, probation, etc. People still use drugs. It takes about ten minutes on the internet to find a solution for securing a clean drug test.

In the end, this will be just an added expense for the state of florida, and people will still get their assistance AND use drugs, if that is what they are into.

These people make me crazy. Really I honsetly think they are afraid some brown people are gonna get their stuff. MINEMINEMINE! Pisses me off. Coming from a home with a single mother raising 3 kids on welfare, food stamps and medicaid and STILL had to work to make ends meet.

20. If you are trying to find out where the most poor people are, its rural areas
Urban poverty is a horrible thing, but in sheer numbers the rural poor outnumber them. Also, contrary to Republican insistence to the contrary, most of the rural poor are white.

22. Here's an example of how stupid most Republicans are
my former boss - Republican, happy-talk, fox-watching asshole that she was used to rail against "welfare" to me.

Oh, and she was a nurse, too. Isn't that special?

Anywho, as a liberal with more class than she, I was raised with the belief that one should not discuss things like, oh, sex, politics, etc at work because it was tacky.

But that is just me. However, I finally got so sick of hearing her yammer on with her stupid-ass shit, I had to quietly and calmly tell her that

1. Railing against everyone on welfare is dumb since
2. there is no welfare since 1996, and a Dem Prez helped drive a stake thru its heart and
3. even when there WAS "welfare" , it was not like 85% of the GDP or whatever shit she was hearing from Fox Noise.
