Lamar County Health Department in danger of closing
by David Carpenter on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at 9:17pm

The city manager on a whim announced Monday that the city would no longer provide health insurance or retirement benefits to the 14 employees of the Lamar health department, no reason was given . The effect will be to close the health department and 1600 women and children will no longer have WIC and several hundred poor citizens will now have no place to turn for medical care. The decision was not made by the city council; just by fiat of Gene Anderson.I am asking everyone to contact their city council rep and demand that this be brought to the entire council for discussion. The fiscal year starts in october and the employees who are eligible for retirement will have to do it now and those who are cut off from insurance will be very lucky to even find insurance .These benefits are paid for out of the budget of the department and there is no cost to the city for providing them . The health department even pays the city $18,000 per year just to do the books. The board of the Health Department met in emergency session thursday night and voted unanimously to demand that the entire city council discuss this critical decision. The City manager was notified of the meeting and asked to attend and provide an explaination as to why the decision was made; he did not attend.

The economic fallout will be much more than one would expect just looking at the surface. The 14 employees salarys will be lost ;each WIC recipient receives from $70 to $130 per month( and we serve about 1,600people per month from the grant all of which is spent in local stores). I estimate the entire economic hit will be well over $2 million dollars per year in lost revenue not to mention the hardships that such a move would engender.I never cease to be amazed at the callous disregard for the poor using the old bromide that they are just lazy and work the system.Children and pregnant women are not working the system , neither are the people who turn to the Health department for the spotty pittance of medical care that we can provide given the connstraints that we operate under. To lose the Health department would mean a major disruption in the glue that holds our community together.BTW I am a Republican .

Now, I don't know this guy, but I googled him and I found this. Why can't we have any reasonable republicans in Washington.

OB-GYN Dr. David Carpenter and six fellow obstetricians deliver the 12 to 15 hundred babies born each year in Lamar County. They're urging their patients to enroll.

Dr. David Carpenter: All of us want to know the factors that lead to childhood developmental issues. We are seeing an epidemic of autism and diagnosis of attention deficit disorder. All these things could have root in environmental factors, nutritional factors, birth factors. Yet there's not been any study to my knowledge that has any power to shed light on the etiology of these various factors. I really think this study has the potential to be one of the great studies of all time in children's health.
