"Will noone rid me of this meddlesome priest?"
Edited on Sun Jan-09-11 05:19 PM by Hugabear
Can anyone explain to me how King Henry II saying "will noone rid me of this meddlesome priest" (Archbishop of Canterbury) to his knights is any different than Palin putting a rifle scope over the districts of 20 Congressional candidates, then asking her followers to help come up with a solution?

Palin, in so many words, asked her rabid (and armed) followers "Will noone rid this country of these meddlesome Democrats?"

1. re:
When Henry II casually remarked, "Will noone rid me of this meddlesome priest" and his followers killed Thomas Becket, King Henry acknowledged his own role in inciting the murder of his friend. As punishment he declared his guilt, and had himself publicly flogged before his own citizenry.

4. That would assume that Palin would feel remorse for her actions, and submit to punishment
I think we all know the likelihood of that happening...she'll never even admit that her vitriol could have ever had anything to do with yesterday's shooting.

11. Then he must have been a leader with the correct
leadership abilities. Notice how Palin has suddenly gone silent. She is no leader. She will not acknowledge her guilt and complicity and make a pledge to do better.

3. Wasn't King Henry II actually remorseful after the fact?

5. Yes, but just pointing out the effect words can have on one's followers
Especially when they are armed followers

12. Do bartenders go to jail when drunken customers crash their cars after leaving?
This is what is bothering me. I want so badly to see some heads roll. And I have heard that bartenders have been held liable. But I'm afraid there is a parallel between bartenders and Palin's words.

Tell me I'm wrong. But if this is right, then Palin is just another person spouting implicit commands, and not guilty enough to do anything about it.

13. In some states, bartenders are held liable
if they serve customers that are visibly intoxicated, or minors. It's called a dram shop law and is on the books several places, including Texas (having been through the TABC training, that is what I recall.)

14. I worry that we're walking a fine line here. If Palin, et al is guilty, then it opens a door?
Or is it a fine line? I mean, crosshairs, "reload", are inciteful.

Then again, if anyone on this board so much as gets specific about harming the President, it's grounds for a visit from the authorities.

I just don't like going down the road I've gone down since 2000, whereby I know someone should be charged, and they end up walking free. Like a Bush free-for-all, and eventual second term, versus a trial at the Hague.

And I don't mean to pick on you. I just don't know where else to post this stuff.

15. If someone on this board made a threat or joke about harming the President, yes that would happen
DU has very strong rules about even joking about harming the president, even back when * was in office. If someone on DU were to make a specific threat against the President, I'm pretty sure that person would get a visit from the authorities, and rightly so.

16. I think they can lose their liquor licenses
& be liable in a civil action, but I don't think they're held criminally responsible.

17. So shouting "fire" in a crowded theater is a chargeable offense.
What just below shouting "fire" in a crowded theater is a chargeable offense? And does posting photos of crosshairs targeting specific civil employees, and using the term "reload" constitute a chargeable offense?

I don't want to start limiting free speech. Maybe just tying these asshats up in court is good enough. But I'm still looking for an answer. Because here we are all convinced that Palin is guilty, and yet i haven't seen any specific evidence that what she did was a crime.

God I want to see these clowns squirm for what they've done.

21. I believe it's already established law that you can't incite people to riot
or break the law. And if by shouting "fire" in a crowded theater, you cause panic & a stampede in which people are hurt & property damaged, hell yeah, you should get stuck with the bill & charged with disorderly conduct.

There already are these limits on free speech for just those reasons.

Personally, I think in regards to criminal or civil liability, there needs to be more evidence presented before I'd say Palin should pay up &/or go to jail. But she & the ilk at Faux should definitely take a hint & dial back the rhetoric.

19. No difference whatsoever. Though I rather liken her to Charles Manson,
who sought to provoke a race war by having his minions commit murder while he stood back and laughed. She seeks to provoke a Rwandan style war of political and cultural genocide.
