7. Bring Roberts, Alito and Thomas up on charges of treason?
.. and replace them?

Would take months for it to get thru to them. And Wall Street would tell them to shaduup and let it be.

13. As far as can be found, there is no one with standing to
legally bring a case to the court against the President...no one has standing to bring the suit, so how would it even get before the Supreme Court for them to rule on it?

10. I'm not posting about what the crazy fucker Teabaggers will or will not do.
I'm talking about what the President said he would do, which was potentially use McConnell's plan. But in no way, shape or form did he indicate directly or indirectly anything involving the 14th Amendment. You are pretending this thread is about what the Teabaggers want or "will allow". This is not that thread. This is about what the President said he would do.

14. Then you better have a reality check....
The Pres can SAY he will go with the McConnell/Reid plan...

The Teabaggers won't let it thru. All it takes is one moran to put his hold on it and it will never make it to his desk.

I hope the 14A'ers read that... I guess they didn't get the memo that the House <with their bug-nut crazy Tea party people> would jauntily pass the Mcconnel plan in a timely fashion...

Some people just need to stop being so pessimistic!

28. FDR took unprecedented actions after the USA essentially went broke. It might happen.
Edited on Fri Jul-22-11 06:33 PM by freshwest
I want this to not happen. But the conspiracy theorists who fueled the Tea Party want it to happen - a default that would cause such chaos that their masters would make a killing. Their godfathers are the same who brought about the Great Depression and Obama has been like the boy with the finger in the dike trying to stem the flood of corruption and theft. This isn't the same country FDR had. We have much less resources, ability to manufacture and feed ourselves, less public spirit and no range of progressive social movements as he had to back him up at the time. Obama has none of that. And they're blackmailing him and us.

23. Obama won't/can't do it and said so today:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4931348

President Obama said today that Congress has to avoid a government default by raising the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling because his lawyers say he lacks the authority to do so on his own.

Responding to a questioner at the University of Maryland, Obama struck the "14th amendment theory" -- that the Constitution gives the president the authority to make sure the nation's debts are paid, including an increase in the debt ceiling.

"There's a provision in our Constitution that speaks to making sure that the United States meets its obligations, and there have been some suggestions that a president could use that language to basically ignore this debt ceiling rule, which is a statutory rule; it's not a constitutional rule," Obama said.

He said, "I have talked to my lawyers ... They're not persuaded that that is a winning argument."
