Congressman Litton, who was considered a rising star in the Democratic Party, had just won the Democratic nomination for the US Senate race in Missouri in 1976 when he and his family were killed in a private plane crash. Carnahan was also a Democratic candidate for Senator from Missouri, in 2000, and was killed in a plane crash shortly before the election.
