WaPo Columnist Blames Oslo Bombing On Muslims And Obama's Weakness

Within hours of the Oslo massacre, the right attempted to blame Muslims and Obama's policies. Here we see the role of The American Enterprise Institute, which got their talking points into the Washington Post within hours. The AEI is now home to John Bolton, Lynne Cheney, and Newt Gingrich:

And if this attack was al Qaeda’s handiwork or the work of an affiliated group, then this is once again evidence that the terror network can hit targets around the globe. The network is not finished simply because Osama bin Laden was killed in Pakistan. Many answered the call for jihad that al Qaeda made both before and after the September 11 attacks. They did not give up merely because the deadliest and most influential terrorist ever succumbed to Navy Seals.

http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/terror-strikes-norway_577274.html

This is a sobering reminder for those who think it’s too expensive to wage a war against jihadists. I spoke to Gary Schmitt of the American Enterprise Institute, who has been critical of proposed cuts in defense and of President Obama’s Afghanistan withdrawal plan. “There has been a lot of talk over the past few months on how we’ve got al-Qaeda on the run and, compared with what it once was, it’s become a rump organization. But as the attack in Oslo reminds us, there are plenty of al-Qaeda allies still operating. No doubt cutting the head off a snake is important; the problem is, we’re dealing with global nest of snakes.”

..................

Obama would have us believe that al-Qaeda is almost caput and that we can wrap up things in Afghanistan. All of these are rationalizations for doing something very rash, namely curbing our ability to defend the United States and our allies in a very dangerous world.

17. It COULD have been one of them there muslims ...
Sorry, that it was a right winger is of no relevance.

That will not even get mentioned by the "liberal media."

They will easily say, it VERY WELL MIGHT HAVE BEEN ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS, so it only proves the point we were making.

Death and killing is always good news for the Rs and bad news for the Ds.

It wasn't just the Washington Post. Our media is messed up and can't seem to report news without letting our cultural fears get in the way of honest assessment.

2. Obama failed to put on his "Super-O" costume and fly over there at the speed of light...
...to take on the gunman by himself, disarm him, and fly him to the police station with thousands of people screaming, "WE LOVE YOU SUPER-O!!!"

Yeah, obviously Obama's fault.

7. What an irrational thing to say. That's just insane. Not surprising,
though, that they didn't bother to wait for the results of the Norwegian investigation before spouting off their talking points. It's called "framing" the debate. I hope it backfires on the contemptible American Enterprise Institute.

And if it was a right wing fundie of the type we cater too and feed their fears then..

Uhh, never mind.

Either way it's still Obama's fault somehow.

Sadly, while I am using :sarcasm:, the WaPo isn't.

15. BBC was no different
They interviewed more than a few so called 'experts' who had the talking points lined up in sync with the RWs in the US, Fortunately they also had folks from Norway who were very cautious and refused to join the 'attack Muslims' crowd.

19. They care about one thing, and one thing only
Keeping the wars going so that the MIC keeps getting paid. They want to keep justifying more war spending while stripping us of Social Security and Medicare. People dying in the streets at home from poverty is of no consequence to them; and neither is innocent people dying abroad.

26. No apology, just a call to spend more on 'homeland defense'.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/right-turn/post/evil-in-norway/2011/03/29/gIQAtsydVI_blog.html

"In our own debates about national security, conservatives argue that national security spending is deserving of a higher priority than other expenditures. The defense budget is not numbers on a balance sheet as some of those on the left and right insist. Cutting defense spending is not the same as cutting domestic spending. That light rail project can wait, or states can do it, or we can decide it’s a boondoggle not worth doing even if we had the money. But national security is solely a federal function, and it can’t be put off.

There are lone-wolf domestic terrorists, and there are organized jihadists. Bombs go off near our embassies. There is no shortage of threats. There is no shortage of evil. Democratic governments have many demands on tax dollars, but none is more important than defending the lives and security of our citizenry."
